I asked that question when I started my career in the lube oil biz. Aviation turbine lube oil falls under MIL-PRF-23699, which specifies tin packaging. It’s generally recognized that plastic packaging can increase hygroscopic contamination and oxidation in ester-based lubes. Grandpa was correct.
