163H codes

Piers Daykin · 2024-11-27 08:19

Can some help me decipher the DTC reading out of my early model 163H AWD controller. They read as an example 168 F01 C30 296 F09 C03 and so on I understand the 168 and F01 but cant work out the C30 part of it. there are multiple codes. Any help would be most appreciated

Can you start with a machine Serial Number please, then I can look up detailed information on Code interpretation. I imagine that it's either an ARL or 5AK machine. IIRC the AWD module on those machines operates somewhat akin to an EPTC-II transmission control. How are you reading the Codes.?

Machine serial number is 5AK00208 The AWD controller has a small window that the codes are read out from in sequence. Another thing is the controller has only 1 harness socket, unlike the 2 sockets indicated in the harness schematic drawing

Thanks for the info. I need to do some digging. I'll get back to you. There are two electrical schematics for 5AK prefix. RENR1437 is for machines 5AK1-155, and RENR1423 for machines 5AK156-Up. Can you check to see if you have the correct one for your machine S/N. If not no worries, I can send you the appropriate one.

thank you very much. my schematic is RENR4154 so not the correct one. would be most grateful for the correct one.

The Cxx suffix is the Count, the number of times the Diagnostic Codes is/was Active in other words. If you want any detailed troubleshooting procedures for a particular Code or Codes please ask.

CID 168 Procedure Electrical System Voltage FMI F01 This fault is recorded when battery voltage is 20 DCV or less. Service Notes: Ensure that service code 168 F01 is on-hold and the fault present indicator is ON (fault is active). The fault can be active any time the key start switch is ON. When this fault is active, the ECM continues to operate the AWD system. Diagnostic operating mode is not entered. The ECM measures the battery voltage internally at connector contact 1. 1. CHECK BATTERY VOLTAGE - Start the engine and run at high idle for several minutes. Measure the battery voltage at the battery posts. When operating correctly, the voltage should be greater than 20 DCV. * Voltage is greater than 20 DCV; battery voltage is correct. Go to Step 2. * Voltage is less than or equal to 20 DCV; the charging system is not correct. Check the charging system. See Starting And Charging System module, SENR2947 in the machine Service Manual. 2. CHECK SYSTEM VOLTAGE AT ECM - The engine remains running. Using sharp meter test leads, puncture the wire insulation near the ECM connector. Measure the system voltage between contacts 1 and 2 of the harness connector. The engine must be running at high idle. When operating correctly, the voltage should be greater than 20 DCV. * Voltage is less than or equal to 20 DCV; harness is not correct. Repair or replace the harness. * Voltage is greater than 20 DCV; system voltage is correct. Go to Step 3. 3. CHECK IF FAULT REMAINS - Disconnect the machine harness from the ECM. Inspect contacts 1 and 2 of the ECM and the machine harness. If necessary, clean and/or straighten the connector contacts. Connect the machine harness connector to the ECM. Turn the key start switch to the ON position. Put the ECM in service mode. Check to see if the 168 F01 service code is recorded and the fault present indicator is ON (fault is active). * 168 F01 service code is ACTIVE; the fault has not been corrected. It is unlikely that the ECM is faulty. Perform the previous Steps again. If the cause of the fault is not found, replace the ECM. See the topic ECM Replacement. * 168 F01 service code is NOT ACTIVE; the fault does not exist at this time. The initial fault was probably caused by a poor electrical connection at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and connected. Clear the 168 F01 service code. Resume normal machine operation. CID 296 Procedure Transmission ECM FMI F09 This fault is recorded when the ECM does not receive information from the transmission ECM over the CAT data link. Service Notes: Ensure that the 296 F09 fault is on-hold and that the fault present indicator is ON (fault is active). This fault can be active any time the key start switch is ON. When this fault is active while the system is in automatic or manual operating mode, the ECM enters diagnostic operating mode. The AWD system shuts OFF and a warning category 3 is activated. Connector contact 8 and 9 of the ECM are related to this fault. If this 296 F09 fault is recorded, a 248 F09 (CAT data link) fault is also recorded. 1. INSPECT HARNESS CONNECTORS - Inspect the machine harness connections related to the CAT data link (wires 892-BR and 893-GN). Make sure that connectors are clean and tight. If necessary, repair or replace the machine harness. Turn the key start switch to the ON position. Put the ECM in service mode and clear all inactive faults. Check to see if the 296 F09 service code is recorded and the fault present indicator is ON (fault is active). * 296 F09 service code is NOT ACTIVE; a machine harness connection was faulty. The fault is not present now. Possibly an intermittent connection exists in the data link circuits of the machine harness. Resume normal operation and watch for a recurrence of this fault. * 296 F09 service code is ACTIVE; the fault remains present. Go to Step 2. 2. CHECK FOR SHORTED HARNESS - Turn the key start switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the machine harness from the AWD ECM and the transmission ECM. At the machine harness connector for the AWD ECM, measure the resistance between contacts 8 and 9. When operating correctly, the resistance should be greater than or equal to 5000 ohms. * Resistance is less than 5000 Ohms; the machine harness is faulty. There is a short between frame ground and the data link circuit in the machine harness. Repair or replace the machine harness. * Resistance is greater than or equal 5000 Ohms; harness circuit resistance is correct. Go to Step 3. 3. CHECK FOR OPEN HARNESS - The key start switch remains OFF. The AWD ECM and the transmission ECM remain disconnected from the machine harness. Check the continuity of the CAT data link circuit in the machine harness. Place a jumper between contacts 26 and 27 of the machine harness connector for the transmission ECM. At the machine harness connector for the AWD ECM, measure the resistance between contact 8 and contact 9. When operating correctly, the resistance should be less than or equal to 5 ohms. * Resistance is greater than or equal to 5 Ohms; the machine harness is faulty. The CAT data link circuit (wire 892-BR or 893-GN) is open in the machine harness. Repair or replace the machine harness. * Resistance is less than 5 Ohms; this circuit is not the cause of the fault. Go to Step 4. 4. RECHECK SYSTEM - The key start switch remains OFF. Remove the jumper of the previous Step. Connect the AWD ECM and the transmission ECM to the machine harness. Turn the key start switch to the ON position. Put the AWD ECM in service mode and clear all inactive faults. The cause is not found, replace the AWD ECM. See the topic ECM Replacement. If this information helps, great. If you need a full troubleshooting guide, write.
