Dilemma finding a cylinder head for a 1967 Caterpillar 922B. Blew the head gasket and they blown it good, between Cylinders #2 and #3. Sent the head to the machine shop for a valve job and resurface the head on Tuesday. It was warped using my straight edge and the .004 feeler gauge went through easily. Got the call from the machine shop yesterday and it was not good news, found cracks magnafluxing it. Even called the customer too and he wants it fixed, a family heirloom which his grandfather bought it new. I did find the cause of the blown head gasket, water pump was leaking and never noticed it. Luckily I can get the parts for it from the Caterpillar dealer I deal with buying parts from. Customer is helping me find a good used cylinder head, he knows of a couple good heavy equipment junkyards
Cannot do much without a serial number.
Tried the caterpillar dealer, none. Machine shop is looking too. This one has cracks in the valve seat area not repairable
That is not a serial number. The reason for a serial number is late 60's the 922 transitioned from a D330 diesel engine to a D330C engine. Two totally different engines and knowing the serial number will ascertain what engine you have. If it is something like a 94A it will have a D330 engine, the head for that is a 2S9004. I got a new one for mine a decade or so ago. Italian CGR brand. You also need ferrules to go with that head. I can post a picture from the parts book if that is what you need. If it is a D330C, do not have a parts book for that, but should be more common. And if your 1967 date is wrong and you have a 59A machine, which is something like late 50's to about mid 60's, it has a D320T engine.
Has the D320T and is a 1967,we got leads on one. A friend of mine said he knows a guy that has one that is good, bare head and has had it magnafluxed finding no cracks in it.
If it has a D320T it's a 59A series 922 which ended in 1965. The D320T was only used in two machines, 922Aand early B's, and the 933G track loader. Parts are becoming scarce for the D320T by now. As R.C. stated, serial numbers are all that matters with these things, build year is nice to know, but pretty useless without a serial #.
Good news this replacement cylinder head was good. My machine shop magnafluxed them and no cracks in it. Did finish it and runs good now
