1980 Case 1150C help

kea ยท 2014-02-08 23:58

I am by no means a Heavy equipment mechanic nor operator. I am a jack of all trades master of none kinda guy. Recently the dozer ran low on trans fluid then stopped moving. Hydraulic tank was also low(Isn't it separate system?) Trans pressure gauge not showing pressure. If I put it in gear the tracks move about an inch then stop. Checked strainers/filters nothing clogged no metal or clutch material either, trans charge pump "looks" fine. The brakes seem to disengage and re-engage clutch/es as they should. Din't make any strange/ loud noises when it stopped working. If it comes down to it I will get a real mechanic out here but they seem to be so busy that it might take a month or so. Any ideas? Model :1150C Year : 1980 S.N. :7308580 I don't know if it matters but this is an old navy dozer Thanks in advance for welcoming me to forums.

Sorry to hear the issues bub, but then the issue of not paying attention to fluid levels comes up. If you ran the tractor with low fluid level long enough to starve the pump to make it stop then you also ran it too long too low and probably ate the trans pump internally. These are PDP or Positive Displacement Pumps, they are metal to metal tight tolerance to deliver high pressure and higher flows, run them dry and they eat out the clearances while destroying the internals albeit most of the time not quietly. You have probably failed the main trans pump, with that you may have damaged the steering feed pump, just trying to add fluid and expecting it to move probably is beyond the point of no return. I bought a machine with weak pumps from this type issue, I ended up changing out all of them and now am at the point of fixing leaks that showed from lack of flow on the old pumps to keep from doing it again. While you are at it fid the largest hydraulics leaks and repair them as well as that pump as considered is also separate from the trans systems. Welcome to the pit(money) and the forum. Lots of entertainment at times, sarcasm and assistance others.

You may try adding about a half a gallon to the transmission and then immediately crank and see if it will move. We have a 1150 that would lose prime to the transmission pumps. We would do this and it would go to work. If you didn't pour a little in the tube before it would do nothing until you let it run for 30 minutes or an hour sometimes.

Thanks, I'll report back when she's running again with results.

Your hyd reservoir holds 15 gal, your trans holds 14 gallons with about 2 extra gallons in the system, must use a good TCH fluid in the trans. Did you pull the belly pan and check/clean the suction filter screen from the trans and did you pull the small charge pump off and take it apart ?. Most 1150's B/C/D/E the pumps are fairly tuff, however the hose clamps, and O-rings have to be tight to prevent air leaks. Was the drive shaft turning while checking or did it stop also?. You could also have a blown trans control gasket, or a orfice tube hole blocked, orfice screen blocked. You may need to remove the back panel, batteries, and plate the batteries sit on. The screen is under the center fitting that the hose to the dash gauge runs from on the trans control valve assembly. The screen is about 1" long and looks like a funnel, It's small less then 1/4" round, should be able to catch the end and pull it up and check it for trash, the orfice tube is on the valve front, spool side, you will see a nut with a screw head, flat blade, loosen nut and screw out, flat blade again in the valve to the orfice tube, screw it out, around 3 1/2" long, has a hole in it the size of a pin, this will pick up trash and stop you dead in your tracks, trash will float in there so wash it over a white shop rag to see if anything comes out, it can be as small as a ball in a ball point pen to stop it up. The trans charge pump pumps 22gpm at 275psi, if it's bad you will also have cooling problems. If you top off fluid and still does not move I would check the screen and tube orfice, after that a flow rater test may be your best bet from a dealer. More later if needed

I'm using Case Hy-trans fluid.(I think that is the recommended fluid) Pulled belly pans and checked suction filter screen.( I noticed a leak in the filter housing gasket maybe this is causing air to get in the system) Pulled charge Pump it looked to be in good shape, bolts that were holding it together were very tight, and the hoses connected to it were tight as well. Drive shaft still turning. Trans control gasket? I'm guessing that is a gasket somewhere on the trans control assembly. Removed batteries and tray, to check the tubes, i didn't find any screens there only a small slotted tube with a spring around it.Nothing clogging them up.(ill take another look and see if i can find what your describing.) No cooling problems. Thanks again I'll report back with tomorrows results as soon as I can.

The drive shaft still turning, does it turn while in gear? If so I would definitely take the pump to a hydraulics shop as it is most likely not making pressure enough to engage the clutches.

TCH is the only recommended fluid for case dozer transmissions, hytran ruins the clutches over time and its gets very expensive to repair.

I put her back together (replaced hoses & clamps, changed all o- rings, new filters) and still not moving, flow test gonna happen either tomorrow or Saturday, picking up manual tomorrow. Drive shaft still turning in gear and out of gear. When I put her in gear tracks move about 6 inches and then stops, then if i take her out of gear tracks move 6 inches in opposite direction. When I pull trans dipstick the fluid is aerated.

kea, if the drive shaft is turning you have lost the connectivity inside the trans. Either the trans feed pump has shot craps, is sucking air due to a strainer collapsed or clogged or just cooked out and not so much aerating but frothing the fluid from bypass. If you have sufficient pressure from the feed pump then the trans will have to come out and down to fix the problem. Sorry. Dave

fill with oil remove plug for filter housing start see if will pick up prime . I have had hose claps at suction screen

    clarification

We started with a low oil in the trans issue with the machine stopped moving, the filters and strainers checked and hoses tightened and toped of with fluid. The thing is we still have not put a gauge on the system, You can have a good pump with a blown set of trans control valve gaskets, need to put a gauge 350psi, into the fitting at the rt hand side of the control valve under the battery box plate. You will see a large turn fitting with a 1/8 pipe plug drilled in it, The supply line from the pump and filter goes into the control valve here. The pressure should read 250 to 310psi, then with no pressure being shown on the dash gauge a possible blown set of gaskets may be a issue also and make the oil look like it has a lot of air in it.. You did not say when you tried it if you were in the high or low range, checked the brake linkage to be sure they are returned, modulation spool movement. I hope you get your S/M and a flow test done so you are not chasing all these issues, if a tech come out have him check the screen in the valve and orfice hole in the tube first to give the best flow test. They will need the multi hose set up to check it, they can flow the pump easy but the rest of the system should also be done. I would get them to bring a pump and gasket with them if it's a dealer so you could do a quick pump change and test on if needed.
