Hello to all! Newbie here trying to help a friend out. He recently picked up an 80 555 UK model for free (get it running you can have it deal) The reason the guy parked it 9 years ago is the rear boom stopped swinging. We got it running and actually drove it back to his house, runs great and everything works except the boom wont swing left or right, you can here and feel on the hose's fluid is trying to go through but does nothing, we took the top cover off and can see inside the unit try's turning. Also the boom just swings by pushing on it, we had to chain it to get it home. One of the main problems we have is someone at one point re-painted it and they ground off all the tags, can't find a model or serial number anywhere, the owner told him it was a 1980 and he had bought it already painted. We need to get a parts diagram or any info on this rear swing unit, never saw ANYTHING like this before, I'm posting pictures of it. My questions are: 1: Is there a model and serial number stamped somewhere on the frame or engine/trans? 2: Anyplace we can call/email for a parts breakdown or any kind of manual? We are pretty handy at figuring things out but, without any info we are reluctant to just tear into this without knowing how it is supposed to operate. Thanks in advance for ANY help with this!!
Pull the swing cylinders on one end and see if they work when disconnected from the mechanical joint. One possibility is that the pistons have come loose from the rods. A good indicator of this is that the boom swings loose even with nobody pushing a lever.
Thanks for the reply! This doesn't have cylinders like the U.S. units have, the unit I pictured is the swing unit, we followed the hoses back and the 2 hydraulic hoses going into the very top in the center of the picture where the paper towel is come off the swing part of control valve. When we push the lever right or left, those hoses are pressuring up. Looks like a big round hydraulic motor. Like I said, this is a U.K. version, we did see it was built in France. A very different unit!
Gotcha. Haven't had one of those apart. Looks like in the past there was a busted bore that's been welded, so it's been through some trauma previously. Best bet may be to just pull it apart and investigate.
Thats what we want to do, was hoping to get at least a blow up of what it looks like inside but guess we will just have to wing it and hope!
Wiggys1. Here is a machine for sale in New York. Maybe call them and they might give you some information. They have a manual. Pic attached. I think this is a similar machine. Here’s the link: https://www.auctionsinternational.com/auction/38511/item/ford-550-backhoe-239035
Thanks for the info, I will have my buddy call them. I see in the ad the same thing is wrong with that one, the swing does not work either, maybe a common problem on these!
That rotary swing motor can and has been converted to a regular two swing cylinder system. Do a search on HEF, because someone had posted a thread and in it he repaired one like yours. He found a source for the seals and parts. This is link to a seal kit for it. Call them for more information about it. Thanks so much Tinkerer, I will pass this on to him. Should be a big help!!
