1981 case 850B track adjustment

Hello there this is my first post and ive got alot of questions ! The guys on this forum seem great as iv been reading many threads ! I bought this machine for moving some rows of dirt i have on my property where swales were dug and piled up. If all goes well with that i plan on digging a large pond in the back and stripping some topsoil on 5 acres ? Keep in mind ive never driven a dozer/loader before so this is all new to me. I think i got a decent deal but ive found that the brakes dont work and i had a busted off carrier wheel in the track that i just fixed so there are a few bugs to work out. But the reason im posting is that i have one track that seems extreamly tight ? I cant even flex or move it when i lift or jump on it ??? Is this right or to tight if so how do i loosen it off ? The next thing is the side that i changed the carrier wheel is now loose ? how do i tighten it and how much ? Im hoping ive bought the right machine for the job so any insight or tips would be great !!! Heres a pic of the machine and the tight track. Thanks

whats the deal on the back of the bucket, boom extension? It looks to me that you have a vertical cylinder pushing in the front idler as the case with most track machines. There should be an access cover to a large nut with a grease zerk on it, if you loosen the nut you should loose tension.

Ya i was told that was welded on for some type of boom extension ? I was thinking of cutting it off ? I will have to remove some covers around the Cylinders to see if there is some type of adjusters there ? Thanks

tracks are adjusted by pumping grease into cylinder, less grease less tension. looks to be under your step

6t9 - welcome to HEF You could play a tune on that track! Track adjuster valve is found on the yoke that holds your front idler - move some dirt right next to the idler & you should see a plug with a square head. This is cover only, remove the plug & you will see a grease nipple (zerk) attatched to a 3/4" fitting - this is the valve - just loosen the valve with a socket - grease will come out & track will loosen. You want a couple of inches slack (up & down movement) between carrier (top) roller & idler. Check fluid levels at brake master cyls ( under left floor plate) use dot 3 fluid. If no fluid see where it is leaking - ie master cyls; slave cyls; leaking pipe /hose, could have internal leak at control valve also........ Adjusters are above slave cyls on front of tranny - adjust so you have about 3" of pedal travel BEFORE brakes are applied. This should be a good start for your problems - come back with further questions. :drinkup

Thanks guys i cleaned off the mud over the plug and grease zerk and loosend the 3/4 fitting and the track dropped perfect! I added grease to the other side and tightend her up so i have about 2 inches of movement/1inch sag in the track !!! Next challenge is the brakes as i couldnt get the cover off last night to check fluid with my little 3/8 rachet !
