i have a 1987 416 cat backhoe, and i seem to have lost reverse, i changed the trans fluid, filter, and cleaned the screen. i found some iron fillings on the screen, and a small circular plastic part of a ring about 2-3 inches in diameter. after changing the fluid and filter etc., i did have reverse but it seemed to have lost power backing up a hill in 4 wheel drive, and didn't spin any of the wheels. i drove it back from the garage, mostly in 4th gear, about 4 miles. when i got back i had reverse, then lost it after the first backdrag aout 20 feet. i parked it and later on i went out and checked it to see if it had just over heated and i did have reverse in 1st gear. i didn't drive it any more for fear i might do more damage . could it be the torque converter. also i have all gears in forward, but as i said, reverse is the problem. what do you think? Regards
We used to have several 416's, we were routinely pulling the trans and rebuilding the shuttle (powershift) section of the trans. Depending on how many hours of use, oil condition, type of use of the machine. Lots of factors to consider. First thing I would do is take an oil sample, change the oil and filter, cut open the filter and remove the filter media and check for debris like clutch material, metal, etc. The oil sample report will give you a good indication also.
Well I don't think it's the converter cause you have forward gears
