Just got a used 1989 d3c series III dozer have to remove the starter. checked the brushes and there frozen to the holders tried everytrick in the book to get them loose but NO luck. Have to pull the starter pulled the bottom pan down and got the bottom bolt out wit a few choice words but got it out. the top bolt was easy. the bolt between the frame??? How does one remove it.. tried evert tool i could think of still no luck.. where is the best place to find a repair manual Thanks Serial number 5KG01009
A stubby wrench worked on my 931B. Solenoid closest to frame had to come off and starter removes from the top. This is with a Nippon Denso starter.
ebay is a good source to check for manuals. Parts books are usually pretty reasonable but Service Manuals are pricey everywhere.
I did get it off yesterday afternoon. I had made 3 tool to take with me. The two on the right did not work at all, the one i cut and welded worked perfect and quick. Had the bolt out in 2 minutes. Could not believe how much oil came running out after I removed the starter. The starter brushes look like new but are rusted in the holders. The starter drive looks like it is new. The machine only has 1136 hrs. It was sitting on top of a farmers mountain in the woods for the last 16 years, and has not been started since he passed away. His son said he purchased it used in Canada with 700.0 hrs on it in 1995.

9/16 starter mount bolts . That's interesting . I thought they were 5/8 12 point. the newer machines use a 10 mm 12 point now . they can be even more of a PITA.
The 40, 42, 50MT Delco starters and some other brands used the 5/8-12pt. Used on the bigger machines.
Yes they were only 3/8 bolts with 9/16 heads. What oil came out wityh the starter removal?? looks like hytran fluid. Got a parts manual on e-bay. 49.00 They want 649.00 for the service manual. OUCH
The operations man was in the holder on the ceiling. Too bad it is in FRENCH..
