1991 Case 550 LT Dozer injection pump issue?

bb286 ยท 2014-06-20 08:08

I have a Case 550 dozer with 2800 hrs that just stopped (like it ran out of fuel or the key was turned off). Fuel pumps out at the filter and the solenoid has power but no fuel after the injection pump. Is there a screen in the injection pump or could it be the solenoid is bad. Engine is Case 4-390. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the HEF bb286! If there is power at the solenoid at the (CAV) injection pump, you should hear an audible click, from the solenoid, each time the power is turned on & off. No click - replace the solenoid.

Have you tried selling it as is, I would give $750 for it? Let me know asap.

    Nice try "neighbor".

Its highly unlikely there's a screen at the injection pump. Check to make sure there's good power at the solenoid (I believe thats a 12volt machine). Do you know what kind of injection pump it is by chance?

Replaced solenoid, fuel pump and both filters... did all the bleeding 5-6 times and it still won't start... I do hear a click at the solenoid... still no fuel coming out of injector pump lines.. at a loss now!

Do you have good fuel flow out of the fitting at the bottom of the tank? I worked on a 450 last week that was totally blocked up with rust and debris.

Were the filters dirty? How much flow of fuel is there at the filters? If it is a CAV injector pump - there is a screen at the inlet - maybe worth a look.

Make sure the fuel return line is clear, remove it at the pump, loosen fuel cap, blow through it. If it's a rotary distributor pump look for a small "window" inspection plate with a couple screws holding it in place, remove the plate (you will get fuel out) should be a timing mark present, rotate the engine and observe if the other plate opposite the timing mark is rotating. If not it's most likely you seized the distributor head and the pump shaft has sheared at it's designed weak point. Replace injection pump. CAV=Stanadyne=Roosamaster, yes?

Here is a picture of the pump. I am bb286's neighbor.

IF it "just stopped" while you were using it and you know theres fuel in the tank AND the solenoid clicks.. BAD NEWS.. the Head & Rotor seized.. Now theres a difference in "how it stopped".. did it spit and sputter like it was running out of fuel?? OR did it just shut off..like someone turned the key switch off?? IF its the later.. H&R seized.. Its gonna be expensive to fix.. BUT what ever you decide to do with the pump... GET THE INJECTORS CHECKED!! a clogged inj. will seize a pump in a nano second.. I hate to see you spend 1000.00 on a pump, only to have it happen again cuz you didn't do the injectors.. I can check around on the cost but I'll need the #'s off the pump nameplate.. PLEASE, PLEASE.. DONT SCRAPE IT!!..get some gasket/paint remover from the parts store in a spray can.. spray it on & wipe it off.. A seizure will happen when the fuel is dirty and makes it to/thru the pump.. so start there.. drain & clean fuel tank.. Your going to need a puller to get the pump off.. the drive shaft is tapered and fits into the drive gear.. to access it, theres a plate infront of the inj. pump. Remove the nut and washer and use the puller.. Sorry for your bad luck.. If I can be of further assistance.. I'm always around.. TPG

Can you take off the plate that is shown in the picture and determine if the pump is seized?

Looks like a manual shutoff to me? Can't see real well, but there are two linkage arms on top of that pump.

Good point, kinda makes you wonder where the solenoid is? It does look like it's in the on position but a wider view would be nice. Yes, the rectangular plate with the two rounded corners will show you if the pump is rotating or not.

Looked it up, fuel solenoid appears to be a cylindrical item screwed into the bottom of the head?

My 1991 4-390 has the manual shutoff on the pump, the solenoid is in the fuel inlet line. On edit: We typed at the same time, but that's it, Lantraxco.

Again.... Were the fuel filters dirty when they were replaced?? Is there much fuel flow at the filters?? If you remove the inspection window & crank the engine it will determine if the pump is turning with engine.

Just started (with my neighbor's help) removing fuel lines to first check injectors per thepumpguysc advice. We have plenty of fuel at bleed points and inspection cover but only a few drops comings out of the lines at the back of the pump going to the injectors. The pump seems to be rotating. The solenoid was at the back bottom of the injector pump. Does anyone know if the injectors are left handed threads... before I break them off? I'll get the injectors out tomorrow and uncover the pump numbers. Thanks for every ones help.

The "shear point" on a DPA pump is inside the head.. Removing the side cover wont likely show a seizure.. the rotor will still spin.. You could remove the inlet fuel line.. fill the endplate w/ fuel and spin the engine over.. if the rotor is turning, it will suck the fuel down.. The threads on the inj. are "basic".. lefty-loosey

Filters were OK with good flow everywhere except out to injectors. Since pump will not draw fuel when cranking engine decided to remove. Made tools to pull injectors and push out pump. Had to pull lock pin to find TDC hole while using turn over tool. Woodruff key was at 12 o'clock. Drained tank and will attempt to clean it and lines while injectors and pump are in the hospital. I'm no mechanic but I did follow every suggestion that was posted... and I thank you all for taking the time to help!
