1995 JD450G. Trying to figure out a wiring issue on the alternator and to the hour meter to get the meter to work. Picture shows connections currently at the alternator. There are 2 wires connected to the back of the hour meter. The wire in the picture with the red line is power wire going to the hour meter and it has continuity. The 2nd wire on the meter which I’m guessing is the ground? Does not have continuity to any of the wires in the picture. With the key turned the power wire has 12 volts when grounding the to frame. With the key turned it has 12 volts at the hour meter side with or without the plug connection being made in the picture. Any help on where the wire should be and help on the loose end brown wire that’s hanging around in the pictures

Welcome to HEF jdrich . Machine serial # ?

I belileve that is a Diode that is black with square hole going through the middle of it when it is together with other half. A real schematic would sort out quickly. Maybe Diode was installed to prevent batteries from being sucked down when not running, was it part of original hook ups. Maybe someone will have schematic. Simon C

Yes it is a diode and it tested fine. Was hoping someone would have a like machine and help me out with a cheat code on which wire is supposed to go where. Thanks for the reply.

Still need the machine serial number.

@jdrich14 Check your messages. Your serial indicates you have gauges and not the Monitor Module, correct?

    Yea that’s right

Was rebuilding my spool valves so just getting around to starting the dozer again. Running it has 12v on the red wire connected to the back of the meter from the alternator and through the diode so it seems to be ok. In the schematic the yellow wire goes to a relay/ fuse. Are the fuses under the dash on this model?

Yes, the relays and circuit breakers should be under the dash.

You’ve been really helpful. So if there’s 12v at the hour meter and the relay checks good then the hour meter itself would be the culprit. Is there a test to rule anything else out? Would the meter not work the same if just running a ground to the chassis to the negative lead on the meter? What is the yellow wire exactly that connects to the negative on the hour meter and goes to the relay? I assumed it was a ground but it doesn’t have continuity with any grounds.

The system is setup to operate the hourmeter when the engine is running. If you grounded the hourmeter to the frame, then it would run anytime the key is on. If you place the clamp of a test light to the battery positive, then touch the test light to the yellow wire at the hourmeter while the engine is running, does the test light light? If you do not have a test light, what voltage do you measure at the yellow wire with the engine running?

Engine running. No light up with a test light. The yellow wire had descending voltage but started at around 140mV. Tested the red wire as well and it was at just over 14v.

If the light did not light, then I would suspect the ground connection was not made through the relay or due to a bad wire/ground. Is the hour meter relay being powered up by the alternator relay?
