1998 Cat D8R Winch Issue

Hello, 1998 Caterpillar D8R Hydraulic winch was working fine and strong enough to drag another dozer the same size when trying to pull it out of the mud. When the towing dozer (not in the mud) started sliding we stopped. The ground was frozen and when we put the D8R (Stuck Dozer) in gear it started climbing out. The driver on the towing dozer started pulling at the same time and we got it out pretty easy. Right after bwe tried rolling up the cable and it worked, but we stopped to adjust the cable roll and then it would not start back again. Now it won't activate either way. Any advice? Mechanic says it's not the linkage. Thanks

May want to post a model and serial number of the winch and and might as well post serial number of the dozer too. Have you tried finding a parts or repair manual for the winch?

Oil system , level , filter(s) screen . Open up the drain plug till some flow comes out after the dozer has been parked not running for a bit , check to see if water comes out . There may be more than one plug. I do this as a matter of course after machine has been parked up . Important to do it before the motor is run .
