1998 Caterpillar D8R LGP problem reinstalling track

Alluck · 2025-01-05 21:50

Hello, Broke a track on our D8R LGP and mechanic got parts to reinstall, but not realigning. Take a look at pictures and give your opinion on what we may be doing wrong? Any tips? Pearls?

Who pressed the links onto the bushing? They don’t look like they were set properly. There is a jig to set them right while pressing. You could use the master pad to see how far off it is. It is much easier to join the link on top of the rear idler. From the picture it’s hard to say how it will look when you bring the links closer together.

For a start, you need to be fitting the track chain together right here. Then see where your croc clip is.

Truly appreciate it. They started in this position and it would not line up. Ended up where you see it now. Trying again today.

The mechanic pressed them in the field with a 10k press. Checked them to the master to my understanding. Going to try and close them don today, just worried about the tension they are under.

Definitely reposition to over the rear idler or you will have quite a fight getting it together. Make sure the canon tensioner is all the way back with no chrome showing.

It looks like a regular/standard rail bushing was used on the master link instead of a master bushing which is shorter.

I don't think that's the case on these link assemblies. The bushes are all listed as being the same Part Number whether it's for a regular link or the master link. Even the thrust rings and the seals are the same. This is provided that they are either OEM parts or an aftermarket copy of the OEM design. OP hasn't supplied a machine Serial Number yet. Some photos taken looking at the inside and outside ends of the pins (arrowed) at both ends of the master link might be a help to see what's going on. EDIT: A photo of the 1st regular link adjacent to the master link might also be useful. Right at the top of the link directly under the shoe there ought to be a Part Number cast into the link.

Does the master pad line up with the holes on the link? Did you push the idler in to allow slack for the hook up?

On a slightly different note, the chains on a D8R are offered in HD and Positive pin retention, not to mention various non oem manufacturers. As previously stated,a part number of the original chain is needed before we can determine if the correct new parts are for the same type chain, and indeed the same brand manufacturer. A Cat HD link that he’s discovered from the parts book may not match up with a non Cat oem PPR link for instance
