Driving an older dump truck the other day and noticed in the mirrors that when turning the rear tires would walk out past the bed but straighten back out when moving straight is this normal?

The centre walking beam bushings are worn out. Common on the Hendrickson walking beam suspension. If the centre bushings are worn out, then the end bushings will be also

that is wild that they would be worn out at 40k miles.

Could be caused by a lot of sharp cornering on city streets, especially on hot asphalt. It puts a lot of strain on the centre bushings when the truck is loaded

That makes scene its a municipal truck hauls alot of asphalt driving on tack oil.

It probably was not spec'ed with lateral torque arms on top of both housings to frame. There is a easy way to remove the beams to replace the bushings.

I wrote a thread on it 7 years ago, later on it raised a lot of unneeded hell. Set the truck straight, support the frame, if necessary remove the 4 bolts holding brake cans and S cam bracket and rotate up out of the way, back brakes off first and single the wheels to outside. Use a gas powered cutoff saw pitched up resting in the front on a 2x6 block. Cut through the rubber bushing, large pin and retaining bolt on both sides of each beam. Use floor jack in center of beam remove the 4 trunnion nuts, knock caps off lower beams. Takes about 8 cutoff wheels, can do it in 1.5 hrs including setup. Done many, many that way. I won't repeat this procedure.
