i was wondering if someone could possibly help me i work with a portable air compressor its a 2005 sullivan palatek 80hp 4cyl john deere we been having problems starting it when she cranks over and you let the button go it will stall and it is hard to start back up we have to use start fulid witch is for diesel engines at first when you hold the button in and turn starter switch it will take a couple minutes to crank over after getting it started it will run all day no problem i am a sand blaster i am trying to get the situation taken care of before any damage is done i dont want that to me i think it might be the fuel injectors if anyone knows about this machine id appericate all the help i could get to fix the problem
This is possibly fuel related. Have you tried holding the bypass button in a little longer before you release it? This could be oil pressure related.
Yes sir I do hold bypass button in a little longer once it cranks it will run for a couple seconds then shut down even when your still holding the by pass button we prime it each time before the first start in the morning when it shuts down I allow it to decompress before I try firing it up for the second time it will just keep cranking I stop let off the bypass wait for a couple minutes then try it again usually after the 3rd time it will fire we changed the oil recently the air filter and fuel filter but it seems it's not getting fuel at first after it starts it will run all day I'm thinking it's either the injectors or fuel pump
We also check the oil and fuel each Morning before we start it as well and there's plenty of oil and fuel
I sand blast 4 days a week and my buddy who owns the shop will usually blast on weekends so we do use it quite a bit I change oil and all filters when it needs to be done this problem just started recently happening to us each time we do the cool down period we have only had to do a emergency shut down a couple times since I've been there due to the hose nipples given away after a few months of use on the blasting tank it's a fun job I love sand blasting
Was the machine acting up before you changed all the filters?
No it was running fine and ran fine after changing oil and all the filters it just started happening a couple weeks ago
When we use the primer lever on the fuel pump it will feel a little hard then all of a sudden it's like it's not priming it
It’s sounds like you are losing your fuel prime overnight. Check your fuel lines for restrictions. Your fuel supply pump will have check valves to keep your fuel flow going the right direction with the right pressure. If you can’t clean the valves you may need to replace the supply pump. Also install an inline fuel filter on the suction line at the fuel pump to prevent check valve contamination
We have noticed as well that there is little drips coming out of the fuel pump could the fuel pump be bad?
We use starter spray made for diesel engines once we shoot a shot of it in there she'll fire right up and she'll run all day it's just worst thing in the morning it seems like there's no fuel getting into it at all so we might have to replace the fuel pump
Yes. Time for a new pump. What is the model of the compressor ?
Now my other question would be when it starts up it starts to squeal we use the spray for belts it doesn't seem like it's the belt could it be a bearing that needs to be replacing as well we can't find out where the squeal is coming from either it's hard to tell
Does it quit squealing when you spray the belts ? Time for new belt(s).
Would it be one of the idler pulley bearings that may need to be replaced
It will stop for a couple seconds and then she'll start squealing again and then after it warms up it'll stop squealing and then you'll hear the squeal as it's running
Yes, it can be anything that turns. You could loosen the belts and turn the pulleys by hand to check them. Alternator bearings will squeal when they are failing.
Ok thanks so much I will let you guys know once we get things straight and taken care of I really appreciate the help
