230clc Deere won’t start… need help

We pulled Excavator in shop to grease and service, and replace door glass, change oil, replace leaky injector return line grommets, and do some welding on the bucket... Well.. we did all the above, and were ready to pull machine out and it wouldn't crank! Here's where the fun began... We bled the injector lines time and time again and it wouldn't even try to crank. Really had a hard time trying to get it to run on either. It turns over really really fast... even has new batteries but still cannot get to crank. Seems like it's not getting fuel. Noticed blinking light on in dash says "check engine" when key on. Called Deere... they came out , hooked up laptop, said laptop couldn't communicate w pump ecm... said we had a bad wiring harness... could be main engine harness, or could be short harness near ecm. So.. we ordered both, put em on, still won't start. Called Deere.. they came out.. said well the harness that was bad shorted out the injector pump electronics mounted on pump. Deere said to take pump off and take it to pump shop and get reman, their advice. Deere pump was 3000... Pump shop 1600. So we put on new pump.. still won't crank. Deere actually brought out new ecm as well and tried it.. still no improvemet. So Deere comes out again and says laptop still won't communicate with pump ... they check the new harness wires and say they are getting messages to pump, but none coming back. They think pump shop gave us bad pump. So we take pump off, return to pump shop, they test and sure enough said the electronic control unit on top of pump was bad. So.. they put a new one on and recalibrate pump... We put the new w pump on yesterday... called deere, asked them is there anything else we should check or do b4 we hook harness up to new pump... they said absolutely not.. hook harness up and try to crank... WE DID... IT WONT START! I can make it run at low speed on either only.. i can keep it running on either... we are constantly cracking lines and bleeding the injectors while cranking and it wont start. IS SOMETHING ELSE UP THE PUMP CONTROL ECM ON PUMP? WHATS GOING ON HERE? Is Deere overlooking something basic? Or do we have another electrical issue? Did welding on the bucket cause a problem? Deere didn't think so. We have welded on this machine for 10 years with no issues... Oh and The batteries weren't on the machine while we were welding. I really need some help. Is there someone at Deere that should be helping the dealer troubleshoot this issue? I'm open for all the help and advice you guys can give Me??? Oh and the flashing light... it is storing a code that says the "failure in ecu to pump ecu communications"... same message every time

Did you disconnect batteries before welding?

Yes actually I believe the batteries were off of the machine completely while we were welding

That appears to be a Bosch vp44 injection pump. If so, you can crank that engine outside the ecu by simply applying system voltage and ground. This will allow it to crank at idle if the pump is good and timed correctly. I use butt connecters that will slide up on the pins. Pins six and seven . You can Google Bosch vp44 wiring diagram and the one for a Cummins comes up and is the same as far as the vp44 is concerned. Also make sure you have system voltage at pins 6 and 7 on the harness coming in to pump with the key switch on.

Not sure of the set up on the Deere, but all the vp44 I dealt with on other applications had a fuel shut off relay that provided to the pump. If there is no power to the pump you will get that no communication code because the pump module is not on.

That's really good information! Thank you very much! I will certainly try that. Do you think it's possible that the main ecu, or even the throttle control unit in the cab w the rheostat is shorting out the Pump ECU? It's almost like something has fried the 2 previous pumps and now possibly even the third??

It is possible, make sure pin 7 does not have continuity to ground.

With the equipment dealers have at their disposal, this should have been easily diagnosed and repaired. I run into this a lot when customers may call a dealer for field service. Very few of their personnel can troubleshoot properly but they can hire parts changers by the hundreds.

YUP.. happens a lot, when batteries are left in the equipment when welding.. seen it 100x.. P&S has you headed in the right direction.. Post #4..

I rebuilt an engine in a 200C LC and ran it for a half a day, then it quit. It blew the tip off of one of the rebuilt injectors I had installed and wouldn't start because mine was a rotary pump and wouldn't build pressure to any of the other injectors to spray. All the pressurized diesel just went into the one tip that blew off. Took a while to figure that one out. Had to call JD out to plug in their computer to find it.
