30 ton Volvo excavator hydraulic problem

Hi guys, Been lurking for a while and saw that you guys are pretty knowledgable and helpful. We have a bit of a problem and I wonder if you can offer any advice. Our aging Volvo EC340 has developed a problem, basically the hydraulic oil in the tank is getting very hot and then shutting off the speed controller, the hydraulic pipes and rams are all staying reasonably cool though. The over heating only takes about 5 minutes of normal work then we have to wait for about 10 minutes for the speed controller to be re-enabled. So far we have replaced the filter in the tank and replaced seals in the bucket ram. This has had no effect though. The EDU shows that the oil temperature is normal throughout so I have my doubts about its competency. Any one any ideas please?

Good day Roger I have done battle with this product on many occasions and I am sorry to inform you that overheating of the hydraulic system was the most common issue. The hydraulic system has three working pumps all of which can overflow generating heat. Please check the obvious first clean cooler and that the air is being drawn through and not around. If there is any history that you have it may well help to reduce the the problem however I would suggest that with the age and cost we are unlikely to find a complete solution. If you need any documentation please drop an email to bucketsense"gmail.com I will try to help you some more. Kind regards Uffex

Roger I missed the correct email address [email protected] there is a shunt valve which is supposed to control the heat distribution if this has just developed and not a case of high ambient temperature. If you need more help drop a line to the address. Regards Uffex

Hi Uffex, thanks for your replies. This is a problem that has just started, we had some electrical problems and had to replace the voltage splitter. Until we did this the computer had stopped working and nothing functioned on the machine. We have now fixed this issue and the computer is working as normal, but the temperature of the oil in the hydraulic tank is very hot after just a few minutes which then disables the speed controller. The temperature at the rams and pipework remains ok. We also changed the hydraulic filter in the tank, this was split!

Where is the shunt valve located?

The reply about changing filter and it being split, might be a clue to some of your problems. How bad was the old filter and the split. Was it enough that could have let part of the filter go into the system and restrict the flow as in the valve showed in the above post.Might have to flush the whole system.Good luck

    Rogerarm, Did this get resolved?

i think you should look at the fan for cooling. He turns it over hydraulic motor and controls temperature controller. Make bypass
