191-7516: Hydraulic Swivel Center Joint it is. can i get at this from the bottom, taking off the hoses and pull it out that way? or will these have to come out from the top and take the cab off? thank you in advance. it is leaking so the plan is to take it off, clean up. perhaps send off for new seals or try to do that work also.
See the attached which may be of some assistance.
ty so much! so looks like it comes out the bottom. thats great news!
Most of them do.
started taking it apart, but posted some info on the unit - dunno if you can solve another case of a missing ID. I just want to be able to buy the right part once i have it out. And thank you for all your help on the forums.
I’m not going to respond to the other thread because it all relates to the same machine. I can only suggest that you start looking closely at the engine for a stamped Serial Number just like the one you found on the 306E. Also post the same photo of the engine again on this thread so that we can tie it all together.
No part Number stamped anywhere on the swivel.?
when i get it off i can clean it all up. perhaps stammped and under slime atm
its a 304 in the other post. the swivel is for the 304. the 306E is fine - works great, got all the parts i need. the 304 is a second machine, the one in the other thread. i only got the code from the engine plate - but cant find any other marks on the unit (the 304).
and again, cant tell you enough how much i appreciate you getting me the serial ID on that 306E, made getting all of the parts from cat easy. they printing off a new ID plate for the machine and its a good runner. but without the serial ID it seems cant do anything with the machine - as far as repairs go or parts!
where i found the plate, just by the fuel injector pump area
But that's not the "engine plate". It's the plate from the fuel injection pump which is a totally different kettle of prawns altogether. The problem is that particular model FIP is likely to be used on more than one engine model. In case anyone else wants to play detective this is a general view of the engine.......
That point was made numerous times during the previous thread. I can't see why you still seem so surprised by it. It's a direct consequence of the fact that, to a certain extent, every machine that comes off the production line is "bespoke" in some way or other. The Serial Number is the only way of identifying the level of "bespokeness" of a particular machine. It's not rocket science.
Stupid question. Have you looked at the counterweight.? That was what gave the clue to the identity of the 306E.
ill def go do that!
If you can find a Cat Part Number on literally anything it might give some sort of clue as to the origin of the machine. Cast steel parts are generally always the best.
i have a camera scope now, and looking in some harder to find places. from some photos the engine i thought was a S4L2, matches a few other machines i saw - but i cant seem to find where they would stamp/cast an ID on the engine. I have more cleaning to do - i think if there is a number on it, ill get it.
found a number:
hope this cast number in the engine can help the case. and much appreciated in advance if able
Well it shows that the engine is a K4N, which leads me to believe that your machine is not a 304 because the all the early 304 models were fitted with an S4L2 engine as far as I know. The only models I am aware of that were fitted with a K4N engine were the early 305s. Is there a Part Number tag anywhere on one of the hydraulic cylinders maybe.?
wow, a "304" thats an early "305" - ill look at the cylinders and also go back to older auctions on 305. K4N is engine - that at least will help some with filters.!
The two attached seem to be the most likely possibilities so far. I can't find any indication that any model of 304 was ever fitted with a K4N engine. Remember my comment on your (what turned out to be) 306E thread regarding decals - "Our local buses have ads for detergent on the side. It doesn't mean they take in laundry."
thank you for the help - as always a great detective! I hope i can match up more of the details on the different 305's and get it even closer. getting new parts without the serial is as always gonna be frustrating with Cat dealer - they - well. it is what it is. I looked around the counterweight but didnt have much luck, camera scope and was really hopn to find something stamped on it.
i dont know if you have access or abiltiy, but would the swivel joint removal in one of the 2 diff 305 ya suggested be about the same as the 306 PDF removal? im under there but things look a bit different.
Does it look anything like the illustration below which is from a 305.? Remember this illustration does not include the hydraulic hoses. If your swivel is different to the illustration then please post a photo.
For whatever this is worth, I have a 305C that was built in 8/2006, and the engine compartment view is Absolutely nothing like your machine. I have had mine apart enough times to be pretty familiar with it. I am pretty sure you don't have a 305C, at least not US market, but without a serial . . . A picture of the whole machine would help, from the picture earlier it looks as though that might be one of those early models with the conventional tail, with the rear hood that lifts up? The C's and E's have just a door that opens sideways in the back, and are a lot less open.
reason for the purchase of a few machines is a building project for my son - lots of earth moving and trenches for utilities. i didnt know all about 'buyer beware' but have learned. the machines work great - but could have put a laundry detergent sticker on the side of it. appreciate all the help from the fourms. Lots of really smart people here. (below is the 306E, not machine in question in this post - and the 279D) this forum helped me solve all the issues and make the fixes myself - used machines need extra love!
i was posting images, and this is not the engine on my machine. i made a mistake in what one i selected and posted - i dunno how - but reposted engine on the machine below. can you delete this image from the post?
this is the engine of the unit in the post. the other image further back in the posts was an error when i was uploading, (i was trying to match engines from what i could find online and it was in my files - but this is one from this morning.)
He doesn't. The conclusion arrived at so far is that because of the installed K4N engine model the machine is most likely to be an early-model 305 built around the 2002-2004 time frame. There were only ever two or three variants of specifically the 305 excavator built with that particular engine model. Nothing else fits from the early 304, 304.5, & 305.5 model ranges; all have different engines and not the K4N. Call it a 305A if you will, certainly pre the "anything-with-a-suffix" model era. See post #22 above.
Add these two to the mix. So the list of runners & riders so far are....... 305 CR - DGT & DSA-prefix. 305 CR - BMW-prefix (grey market model) 305 SR - DCR-prefix (grey market model)
@Nige if you have time, do you have a PDF about the removal of the swivel from the 305? I have 2 photos, and have been working on it. im sad as it slow going and dunno how ill get the ones up higher - this is sorta a crapy repair to have to do. i dont have the serial ID as you know, but found a parts plate on the bottom of the unit - so i hope i can get a new one or they can rebuild this one.
i guess if i have to take the cab off, i might as well get started on that - i took out a floor plate but stuff still seems too far down to reach. perhaps i take out the seat.
So in answer to your last question, according to the service manual yes the cab does have to come off. See attached.
ty. its a big project, but guess the machine will be gtg - ty so much for helping. damm cab off, guess it will be better to just get that part done now.
I should have mentioned it above, but the 191-7516 Swivel Gp as per the tag is used on both the DGT & DSA-prefix early-model 305 excavators.
thats great news! now that will help if i need more parts. thanks again for getting what info you can scrap together and keep me moving thru repairs.
you dont have a pdf of what steps to get the cab off properly do you? I know ill have to go get the service manual or find one online, ive watched videos but non for the year(s) - some newer ones just tilt back.
See the attached. It applies to both DGT & DSA-prefix 305 excavators. Pay close attention to the procedure and the photos it contains. See how it stacks up physically against your machine. It could be another clue to the provenance.
as always that document is like gold! Id not have been able to 'figure' all of that out by looking at the machine. but now i can prepare, a ton of hydro caps and plugs for sure. ty for the help. the images do look a lot like the one im workin on for sure.
