320D – Engine Timing Offset

shinigamix2x ยท 2015-10-12 15:57

Good day, Having problems with this error code: 261-11 (Engine Timing Offset fault) The engine starts fine, has no misfires at idle and at full rpm. We've installed a new harness,(first harness was pretty baked), new timing sensor for the flywheel, the ET shows all the sensors working fine, The service manual says to check the timing on the fuel pump, but wouldn't the engine misfire if the engine timing was off?

Machine Serial Number would help. There are over 30 different models of 320D ......... Are you getting the Code displayed on the monitor..?

Just as a completely ignorant observer, sounds to me like the timing sensors are not pulsing at the proper sync intervals? Maybe nothing more than slack in the gear train.

Serial #: KGF00584, also same problem with another KGF00580, both excavators have the timing sensors reading well. The code does not show on the monitor when active, i think it was logged though, on ET when the engine starts and idles there's no active error code but as soon as the engine throttles 1300 rpm and more the offset timing fault code (261-11) pops up after. As lantraxco said, the timing sensors are not pulsing at the proper sync, at first i though that was the issue so we changed the sensor, i didn't change the one on the injector pump though, but that's also reading fine. the rpm sometimes differ up to about 18 rpm for the most. The only reason i'm trying to sort this out is because the engine shuts down after the stalling the hydraulics for about 4~5 seconds, pump pressure sensors and power shift solenoid and magnetic speed sensor are all new and calibrated so i figure the hydraulic pump itself might have a drag in the swash plates (both excavators same identical problem - both around 9000 ~ 10 000 hrs) I'm thinking this error code is not the cause for the engine to stall under load? If you guys know what symptoms this code will bring would you inform me please?. Tomorrow we'll pull the front cover and inspect the timing and also it'll be easy to change the speed sensor on the injector pump as well. It could be that the injector pump sensor is the culprit, surely we'll come to a solid conclusion by then.

That code usually comes when the commonrail pump have been removed and put back in a tooth or two off, it still runs like it should but throw that very annoying code meaning you have to pull it and put it back in properly. So, have the pumps ever been out/replaced?

This is the first time it's been out, before removing it we checked timing again and the timing was perfect, the speed sensor on it did have a little wiggle, the 12mm bolt was tight though, by removing the sensor actually broke it how tight or stuck it was on the pump, tomorrow we'll time the pump again with the cat timing tool and reinstall with new sensor. We should get the error code off for sure, with the engine 100% i'll proceed to troubleshoot the hydraulics again.

well today we started her up again after installing new timing sensor on the injector pump, the error code is no more. engine 100% fully functional, the problem was really just the timing sensor on the injector pump, even though i was getting a reading on the ET from it seemed like it was not pulsing the way it's supposed as lantraxco pointed out. The hydraulics still stalled the engine so we'll remove the pump next and check for any wear on the swash plate bearings (power shift and main pump pressures reads fine), i didn't check the negative flow. but it's good to know that this code has really no effect on the performance of the engine. The other excavator with this same error code and engine stalling condition i'll go straight to the hyd pump, bring it in the garage instead of trying to sort it out on the field.

How do you carry out timing calibration on the 320d serial number kgf after replacing the engine ecm
