Working on a 3304. Should I get type 1 or type 2 crankshaft seals?
Not familiar with Type 1 or Type 2? What do you mean?
My parts book shows a type 1 and type 2. The seals are different in the pictures but the part numbers are the same for the rear but are different for the front? Trying to find out which ones I need.
That should be determined according to your engine serial number.
Post the part numbers, might be able to check through SIS, more likely than not both the types have changed a few times since the parts book was printed. S/N of engine would also help. Most Cat crank seals are best installed with the special tooling Cat has for them. It is possible without the tooling but if it's your first time might be better to either borrow tools if possible or pay someone with the tools. If engine is out of machine you could take it to dealer/shop and have them installed in both ends in less than an hour.
With CAT, types are not distinguished by serial number, gotta love it. Typically the Typ2 would be the latest upgrade so go with that if it fits physically.
To clarify a bit, CAT parts books show serial number breaks when changes are made in production. If an individual part is superseded the old part is replaced with the new part number in the parts system. Type 1, Type 2, etc. are when CAT has a problem and throws maybe a field fix at it, anything after Type 1 means the first fix was a failure and now the engineers are just guessing. Typically these entail more than just one part to be changed and as they go up in number parts for the lower Type numbers become no longer available. Clear as mud? Thank mother CAT and the genius that thought this system up.
Thanks lantraxco. I'll try for type 2
I would guess it's the difference between what Cat calls the "silicone" type seal which is a traditional lip type seal and the new style "hydrodynamic" seal which is the one piece seal and wear sleeve type. I've yet to come across an old engine that can't be retrofitted with a hydrodynamic seal.
