looking at a 97 544g engine needs rebuilt, dont know why or what was wrong with it but it has been removed, if its a standard rebuild with no out of the ordinary requirements does anyone have an idea what that would cost? parts only, not the labor, thanks
Rebuilt a 644A last year, it was around $8500 for parts. It took head, crank, cam, oil pump, injection pump and every thing else. They didn't change the oil in 5 years as close as anyone can remember. The last 466 jd engine ran about $4200 for parts. That was using JD parts and rebuilding head and rods. Have used reliance kits before they have just as good of warranty and would save some money. A tractor this fall had everything quoted for $16000 then found head cracked, block cracked and crankshaft bad. After that cheapest route was a reman engine for $19000 with out labor. Figure on the worst and hope for the best
Just like GOINGBROKE said, Reliance parts are a good product. Kits include sleeves, pistons, wrist pins, rings, all seals and gaskets, new snap rings for wrist pins, new rod bolts, bearings. Can't remember if you have to use new head bolts on this engine or not. I would reccomend having the fuel injectors and maybe the pump checked out also. I would think that the engine overhaul kit alone would be around $1500-2000. Maybe even less. Been awhile since i have purchased a reliance kit. Don't be afraid to compare Deere price as well, you might be suprised. Depending on the engine condition, you may or may not need cylinder head repairs. Typically these engines get water in the oil due to liner cavitation around the o-ring seals on the liner. When you have the liners out of the block, look closely at the surface in the block where the o-rings are, make sure no pitting there as well. Do yourself a favor and replace thermostats and hoses while you are doing the job too. The engines are very easily removed from G series loaders.
