580 d case backhoe

CASE1234 · 2023-03-20 23:29

finally got the swig cylinder rebuilt. took her out for a spin. got 100 yards from my building and it just started to slow down and quit. been running great. been awhile since I've worked on diesel engines. not sure but i think maybe i nee to bleed my fuel lines but haven't figured that out yet. you can hear a click when you turn the switch on so i suspect the air shut off vale is open. not sure where its located. anybody have some good advice for me. always appreciate the help. thanks

There isn't any air shut-off valve on your 580D. Sounds like it ran out of fuel for some reason. Remove the fuel filter (#14) in the injection pump and clean it. Determine if fuel is being delivered to it. If it isn't check the filters. Check the fuel flow from them back to the tank. The outlet on the tank could be plugged. You need to get a service manual. It will have everything you need to know about bleeding the fuel system. Use the CNH on-line parts manual for reference to the fuel line routing. https://www.mycnhistore.com/us/en/c...96-EFBE-E111-9FCE-005056875BD6?serial_number=

When i bought it a month back i remember the fellow told me the case engine had been replaced with a cummings engine it and the engine had the update modifications in it. been trying to find a number on it so i can get a manual for it. i think its definitely got a fuel problem. he did tell me the fuel pump had been rebuilt at a shop. on the left side there looks to be a fuel pump mounted on the engine with a large leaf like switch that you can move. just wondered if that's a way to prime it. does anyone know what model engines they used from cummings in those 580d tractors. thanks.

You have one of a kind conversion if it has a Cummins engine in it. Post a photo of the fuel injector info. tag. thepumpguy may be able to tell you what model that engine is. It is most likely a 4-390. Is it turbo charged ? Lord only knows what was done to the fuel lines and weather it has a lift pump in it.

The D was the series that used the Case built 207 Diesel, Case offered a engine conversion package to update to the CDC engine but it was rarely done .

Its not turbo charged. ill look tomorrow but down low on the left-hand side of the block there is what looks like a fuel pump so I'm wondering if it is a lift pump. there's a long arm on it that maybe it can be bled with it. if it stops raining tomorrow i can find out more. thanks

took the fuel line of the lift pump. got plenty of fuel. I took the discharge side off of lift pump. got fuel. when i try to use the arm on the lift pump to prime it feels as though its freewheeling. i did give it a shot of either and it fired up momentarily. i found a number 27H8 on lower left side of block. took the battery out now to charge up. at least the rain went away.

Check the fuel solenoid on the injection pump. It may be defective or it may not be getting power when the ignition switch is in the start and run position. You may need to remove it to see if it is working.

ive looked for that but havent found it but it did try to run with either. i think i need to know what engine i have. the parts manual for the 580 d doesnt show a lift pump.

Your machine has been upgraded from a Case 207 engine to a Cummins 4B or what Case called a CDC 4-390. It will be the same engine as used in the 580E/SE. From the pictures you posted I can't see a wire going to the underside of the injector pump - which should be connected to the fuel shut off solenoid. By the description of what happened when it stopped, I would be looking at your fuel supply & also remove the fuel filter & check if there is any water in there. Is there an in-line fuel filter between the tank & lift pump? You will need to prime the fuel system afterwards - I've discussed how to do it here

That is because the 580D parts book has the Case 207 engine. Alrman indicated that you will need to use the engine section in the 580E/SE parts book. You posted a good photo of the lift pump on your Cummins engine. The lever on the bottom of it is used to manually prime the filters and pump. Sometimes it won't work if the camshaft lobe is holding the internal lever that moves the diaphragm up and down. That condition requires turning the crankshaft to get it off the lobe.

That inj pump is a Delphi/CAV DPA pump.. I don’t see a wire to the solenoid either.. and the manual s/o lever isn’t hooked up..(lever on the top cover in front of the throttle lever) The solenoid is on the bottom of the pump where the lines hook up.. it’s rather large and takes a 15/16” wrench to remove it..
