580L electrical/Guages

Big Dog Lowe · 2023-12-17 18:50

When running, the gauges are (rpm and volt) are acting up. It seems to correlate with the volt meter surging. Thoughts on what is causing this? See attached videos. Thanks

Doesn’t seem to allow me to attach a video. The engine revs up slightly, the voltmeter rises to just in the red and the rpm guages jumps back and forth.

Sounds like a voltage regulator issue. Did you check the voltage with a meter at the alternator yet ?

    No I will tomorrow. Thanks

Is this happening at an idle? Or at mid and higher engine speeds only? Do you have any lights that have blown lately? I would check battery voltage with it not running, then check it at idle, and mid speed and full speed.

So it happens at idle, mid and WO. At all of those the alternator is putting out 16 volts bouncing to 17 once in a while. But pretty steady at 16.

That voltage is too high, should be only 14 to 15 volts, even that is high. Sounds like the voltage regulator.

You may have a short,or a burned relay under the dash. Try the horn and turning all lights on to see what the voltage gauge does. Understand that is only a gauge and not a meter. Good luck.

With all lights, flashers on and the heater on high at idle I had 15v at the alternator and at the battery. Revd up with all those on I had 16v at both locations. Then lights heater etc off at idle I had 15v and revd up 16 and 17. Regulator is in the mail, hope that fix’s it. Those measurements are with a meter. The gauge rises into the red and back down just into the green no matter what rpm. Thanks

Problem solved, everything works like designed now. When attempting to R&R the v regulator found the ground stud on the alternator was stripped out. So short of drilling out and installing a heli coil simply installed a new alternator and all my problems went away. Thanks for all your advice.
