60XT starting problem

ULflyer · 2024-03-08 11:01

Hi to all. I have a 60XT with the 4-390 engine. Was running fine then quit a while back like you turned the key off. Found a broken wire going to what I assume is the fuel solenoid (top one in pic). Once fixed started fine. Few hours later quit again. Repair was still good and can hear solenoid click when key turns on. Noticed another solenoid below that on injector pump that looks like comes from a temp sensor in the side of the engine that supplies 12v when the key is turned on, but seems to do nothing when I removed it and applied voltage. Does that mean it is bad, or am I assuming wrong (again). Thanks for any/all help.

The one on the side is actually a “thermo wax motor”.. U won’t get a immediate response from it.. it takes time to activate 5 minutes maybe.. THAT won’t have any effect on starting or shutting off unless the wires were switched. The weak point in that system is the lift/supply pump and filter/s.. change them out and get back to us..

Thanks for the reply. I did change out the fuel filter and water fuel separator the last time it quit, and did have good flow when opening the bleed screw while cranking which led me to believe the pump was good. Will check that again.

Probably a good idea to remove the fuel solenoid and check for good movement even though I can hear it clicking?

A lot of times when bleeding the line, you’ll get fuel, then air, then a mix of air and fuel.. then just fuel.. it’ll trick the untrained.. seen it a million times.. Another thing that’ll help is fill the filter and then screw it up.. More than likely, u gulped some air & now you’ll have to bleed the injectors too.. loosen the nut at the injectors a turn or two. & spin the engine until they start to spit fuel and stop. Now tighten the injector lines.. Hold the throttle at 1/2.. and start the engine.. keep it at 1/2 until it quits “stumbling”.. Good luck

Finally got a chance to try your suggestion today…… WOOHOO! Loosened the injector lines and cranked it over. Dry for a few seconds then a good spray from all of them. Tightened them back and started right up! Thanks thepumpguysc, you really do know your stuff!!

Upper left in your pic. looks like you have a broken bolt and maybe something missing. Don't know if it's for the throttle or shut off but appears to be a fine adjustment bolt across from it. It could be just a mark from hitting the adjustment bolt but looks more like a broken bolt.
