651 Elevators

stretch · 2009-03-06 15:30

I was doing a bit of searching on Piacentini & Sons' website and they claim to have six 651 elevating scrapers in their fleet, but couldn't find any pics. :bash Just wondering if anyone had any pics or info on them.

I've never seen an elevating 651. The biggest Cat self-loader I have seen is a 633. I understand they made a twin engine version of it called a 639, but I never saw one they're pretty rare.

I went to their website It says their elevating 651s are custom built by themselves. I didn't think Cat made them.

The earlier machines have 333FT Wabco bowls behind them with the rear engines removed. The later ones were completely custom built.I think there is 2 with the Wabco bowls.I have a few contacts within Piacentini so I will try for some pics. Shaun

I've only seen pics of 651 open bowls, never seen an elevating 651.

Sounds like a custom job to me. The biggest elevators that Cat ever offered on a production basis were the 639D's

Yeager had some 639's in Souther Cal I saw in the early 90's.

Company here on the Sunshine Coast has got / or had 2x 639 Ds and did here of a 627 converted to an elevator, was owned by Cloutman Bros in NZ and was used in the Waikato Nth iron sand mine.

WOW!!!! Thats sweet looking!!!! We have 2 633D's that are nice but if you are in ground that is soft or pumps at all, they wont get out of their own way. The pusher engine must fix that problem. Are the bowls the same as a 633 as in capacity and design? Id love to be able to take one for a rip.

  11. #11Shaunrh2009-03-10 06:59

The bowls are the same design as the 633 but I think they hold a bit more. Not sure though as we do not have any 633`s to compare it to.

  12. #12JDOFMEMI2009-03-10 11:45

The bowls hold the same, not counting the added spill guard to keep material off of the engine in the rear. It's a weight issue why they would not hold more, not because of the power. Just like a 631/637, they both hold the same.

seen that one working next my place Ertech still has their 639D spend alotta time swinging spanners on that thing over the years

old post i know, but Piacentini do alotta custom stuff to their scrapers, we had afew on hire to us, they run D4 dozer track chains on their elevator flytes with a fixed idler setup using a pinned, swinging "carrier" roller arrangement on the top side to get adjustment on the chains the 651's they might be refering to might be auger's?

they rebuild and modify their machines to pretty high standard, particully the scrapers, we had 3 on hire on a remote jobsite, they sent the 3 639Ds 2 operators and 2 mechanic's, one 40ft workshop and one 40ft container with a spare rear module, spare front trans, tyres, pumps, cylinders ect.. they dont stuff around worked out well for them as they sold most of their parts to us to keep our scrapers going haha

Ah, here I was feeling pretty lucky to have an old photo of a 639D, Until Shaun came along with that very nice rig..... Maybe the elevator hydraulics were a bit tired but the extra push wasn't very needed, it could overload and stall the elevator if you cut too deep. 651's with elevators would be custom. Much of their work is in mineral sands. Soft dry sand can be a bitch to work with. Not stiff enough to push into an open bowl. Elevators load it well but sometimes by the time you get to your destination half of it has leaked out. Single powers get bogged easy if you cut too deep. It can really test your patience sometimes! I have heard of 657's with twin auger's. That could be pretty awesome. 637D with an auger was great.

yeh, surprising sometimes how good single power elevators go, i was out at Olympic Dam recently with 5x 633Ds 2x 633Gs 4x 639Ds 2x 627G augers and the single powers went good, its pretty much desert sand out there, we had a D6R with a scrub rack doing clearing and the 639Ds taking off the loose dry sand for the single powers to get into it, 10x 740s and 3x D400EII water trucks, was good fun looking after them!
