Hi, i have just got a hold of a Caterpillar 930H, Prefix FTD . Condition unknown. After giving it a full service and taken it for a test run the transmission is making a bit of a grinding noise when the machine is in motion. During service the transmission screen was pulled and filter was cut open. Both were clean. Few very small flakes in the screen but much better than many others i have seen. I have jacked the machine off the ground and ran it and confirmed the noise is coming from the transmission, but the noise is not there when the machine is idleing or stalling the transmission, only when the wheels are spinning. Is there any more that can be done? or any repairs that can be done with the transmission in the chassis? Or is the only option to pull the cab and transmission for overhaul?
When you removed the screen was there any external evidence to suggest it had been removed recently.? Just wondering out loud if a previous owner had removed the "evidence" of a failure.? If you have gone as far as removing front & rear driveshafts to definitively isolate the noise to the transmission then there really doesn't seem any other alternative to pulling it. Did you pressure test the transmission.?
