941 Loader Purchase

Metalman 55 ยท 2015-10-24 07:20

We made the 200 mile trip yesterday to check out the the 941 Loader, Ser 80H299X (cannot read the last digit), tried it out for 15 minutes in a pile & then decided to purchased the unit. Everything looked good on the gauges when I ran it. We adjusted the brakes a bit before running it as the previous owner was not sure on the adjustment & the pedals went down a bit far. It did not have any leaks & the engine sounds good too. Sheet metal looks to be in great condition, with no major dents anywhere & none of the covers were missing. The only Ser # tag I could see was on the RH loader tower when sitting in the seat & as mentioned the last digit I cannot read. Can any provide me with the build date? Is there another location for a Ser # plate on the 941 that anyone is aware of, where I may be able to read the whole #? I looked on the back of the machine & do not see anything there. Ironically, my cousin's & her husband (the bald man in the picture) live on the same road just 1.5 miles away from the seller (3 hrs North of us & he knew nothing about this machine being offered for sale) & he has a little job for me to do before moving the loader home! We plan to just cat it up the road to his place.

Nearest I can get to a Date of Manufacture is the month of January 1972, not the actual date. For the Serial Number there may be one stamped on the chassis somewhere in the area under the fuel tank about where the guy in the coveralls is working in your 2nd photo has his hands. It won't necessarily be a S/N plate, probably just a stamped number on the frame.

Looks pretty nice for a 1972 machine! You say it's 3 hours north of you and you are in Ontario? Is that up in polar bear country?

The Build Date is stamped on the R/H hard bar on the track frame bolting area, their is a second serial no to be seen with the rear weight removed, sometimes a build date is stamped on the side of the loader frame L/H up near the top pin locating the loader frame to the chassis, the general look of this track shovel is very impressive. good luck with things tctractors

The polar bears are another 10 hrs North of there yet!! Just porcupines, moose & black bears where the loader is!

Made the 200 mile trip up to where the 941 is located yesterday, which just by mere coincidence happened to be just 1.5 miles where my cousin lives, on the same road & travelled the machine up to his place & did a job for him, widening his driveway in to his place. The machine worked hard for a couple our hours, including rooting out some fair size stumps & everything seems quite good. Hope to move it home next weekend.

Other than worn track pads it looks in great shape. Can we ask what you paid? I've read that there's not a lot difference between the 941 and the 951. just slightly smaller. Right track might be a little tight.

Paid $7,500 for the 941. I could never figure out why they made both the 941 & 951 models, as there was only about a ton difference in weight & about 10 hp separating the two machines.

Today we had the 941 shipped down the 200 mile distance from Northern Ont to my place. I went on Ebay & found a parts book & it was shipped a few days ago. I need to get 2 shank/tooth assemblies to replace damaged shanks where the teeth are missing on my Multi-purpose bucket. I assume it would be called a Multi-purpose bucket, as it is not a side dump or 4 in one bucket. In the parts book it gives part # 6K1270 for the "Tooth Group" & I am assuming that means everything, including mounting hardware, shank, keeper pin, plug & tooth?

Yes, 6K1270 is the part number for the group which includes everything, but notice at the bottom is says "Only separate parts serviced". This means you can't buy the group, you have to order the individual parts.

Also, a multi purpose bucket in Cat speak is a 4 in 1. 6K1098 and 7K7980 are both 4 in 1, so your bucket must be a 5K9687.

Ok, I looked further back in the parts book & found the 5K9687 Bucket, shown with just a plain cutting edge. It is simply referred to as a "bucket assembly", but looks like my bucket, minus the teeth. Thanks for the help.

If you look on the RH top corner of the back side of your bucket you MIGHT find a data plate with the Part Number and date of manufacture, etc, etc. The reason the bucket appears minus teeth in the Parts Manual is that there is more than one type of tooth available for it, hence the bare bucket appears on one page and the tooth options appear on separate pages. You have 2 options for bucket teeth, short or long. The 6K-1270 Tooth Group is a short tip, 6K-1271 is a long tip, the only difference between the two groups being the tooth tip itself. As CM pointed out generally speaking you can't order a group like this one as one single part number you need to order individual parts. The clue is to look for comments like "not serviced separately" or "only separate parts serviced" in the text of the group title. If there is no comment in that vein then you should be able to order the group part number.

Thanks for the info on the parts breakdown. No data plate on the bucket, but was able to order some replacement teeth from the Cat dealer.

The RH track on the 941 is a bit loose so when I went to put grease in it I see the previous owner had put a grease fitting in the spot where the release valve is located & the grease fitting is broken off where it would normally be. I tried to adjust the track using the "valve location" where they had put the fitting in, but it will not budge. My finger shows where the grease fitting is broken off. Should either location work to put grease in? See the other picture which shows where the idler assembly is in relation to the end of the track frame. Can anyone tell from the pic if there still may be a bit of travel left, or might it be at the end of the adjustment?
