950H Cat. loader rough shifting

tomstine · 2023-10-16 21:59

My 950H transmission is doing a rough "clunk, clunk" when shifting from reverse/neutral into forward gear. It's much worse when machine is warmed up real good. Shifting from forward/neutral to reverse is fine. The problem has been progressively worse for many months, now. Transmission fluid is new and full, all u-joints appear good.

How many total hours does it have.? Transmission & transmission pump original.? Have you removed the magnetic screen recently.? What was the condition.? What type/grade of transmission oil are you using.? Can you post a Serial Number to help in locating technical information.

I'll get back to you with that info - thank you for replying.

Also let us know if you have access to a couple of pressure gauges that read to maximum 500-600psi.

Roger that. Haven't forgotten about your info request. Thank you.

ok. . . @16,500 hrs, original tranny & pump, magnetic screen not checked recently, delo 400 30w oil, serial #: K5K01090, we do have 500-600psi pressure gauges.

With 16.5k hours on original components it is bound to be getting tired........ That's an engine oil. It has no place in a Cat transmission if you want it to live, and I think this is where we came in......... If you are using Chevron products then the correct SAE30 oil to meet Cat TO-4 specification for use in that loader transmission is Chevron Delo TorqForce. Here is a LINK to the data sheet. The first thing I would suggest is to drain & dump the oil, remove the magnetic screen and inspect it. Post photos of what you find both metallic & non-metallic.

we replaced the oil with Torqforce and checked magnetic screen. I didn't get a picture of it but the mechanic said it looked pretty good with only a small amount of metallic shavings. I'm plowing snow now with the loader and not running too hard and as long as the temp gauge stays just below halfway mark the shifting from reverse to forward is almost completely normal. But as soon as it reaches the halfway point on the gauge (about max running temp) it begins the rough, jarring, double-clunking. It's really bad if I don't come to a complete stop. But even then it will still do a little bit - and it gets to be a rough shift from 2nd to 3rd. My boss said we should check the cooler.

You can but I don’t think that you will find anything. My first suggestion would be to have the clutch modulation solenoid valves recalibrated. I would imagine that it is probably a long time since this was last done. The downside unfortunately is that it will require Cat ET to perform this procedure. It's not necessary to have a dealer do the work if you have a local independent tech who has ET. See the attachment. Pay particular note to the comment on the last page regarding any particular clutch being "At a Limit". This means that the calibration has gone as far as it can but the desired result has not been achieved. The implication is that the particular clutch/clutches for which that message popped up are at or near their wear limit. It would not surprise me if you reported back that this was the case.

I appreciate your time with this - thank you - and will relay this information to the boss/owner of this loader.
