953 electrical

My service manual and parts manual for this machine leave a lot to be desired. My 953 alternator light flashes continuously with engine running. Batteries stay charged and the alternator tested ok at a trusted shop. This problem developed 4 or 5 years ago, but now it's time to buy new batteries (old ones are over 10 years old and won't crank) and I'd like to find the cause. Manual says problem is is alternator or regulator or wiring harness which all check out. Ideas??? As an aside, there are two identical NO pressure switches on the engine: one faces to the right and one faces forward. Could one pressure switch be in line with the output of the alternator?

Do you have an electrical schematic..? If not and you want one PM me the machine Serial Number and your email address.

The "R" terminal on the alt keeps the light off. It puts out a pulse signal to the ECM indicating the alt is charging and the engine is running so other warnings work. Check for a pulse with a test light, if you get one then the wire is open back to the ECM. Later Bob

Bob, Further study of the 953 manual indicates that voltage output exceeding 10V at the R terminal will turn out the LED Alt warning (flashing) light. Whether or not it is a pulse, I do not know. As soon as the machine is back up and running I will check that R output for 10 or more volts. Thanks...

It's 24 Volt on a 50% duty cycle= 12Volt RMS and NEEDS a pulse to keep the alt light off. You can fake it to check the wiring and Monitor Board by taking a probe with 24 volts on it and pulsing the R connector on the wire on and off in one second or less intervals. That will put the alt light out. Later Bob
