3 questions before the track loader experts pitch up: What oil is in the transmission..? What engine coolant are you using and does it heat up as well as the transmission..? Any recent component replacements..?

  2. #2Andrew012019-06-04 12:53

Not sure on oil in transmission planning on changing it and all the filters Far as coolant water and regular antifreeze and no it doesn't heat Not show all the components replacement just bought it 3 weeks ago

  3. #3Andrew012019-06-04 12:57

The trans oil looks like 10w smells like it too but i dont know what brand it is the cat place told me to use 10w

  4. #4Nige2019-06-04 13:05

10W Hydraulic is the recommended oil, so you're not far off there. If it has green "old style" anti-freeze in it a switch to a red ELC coolant might be worthwhile. Next step would be to change transmission oil and filters, cut old filters and look for particles in the bottom of the pleats. Personally I'd go for OEM filters and a good brand (Shell, Mobil, etc.) 10W oil. Do you have an Operation & Maintenance Manual for it..? Best $50 you'll ever spend.

  5. #5Andrew012019-06-04 13:09

Ok will do on the red anti-freeze And i got all cat fiters for it now because the filters that are on it now are car quest brand And no i dont have the operation and maintenance manual

For a manual, go to https://catpublications.com/ On the popup click, "Continue as Guest" Type SEBU7115-06 in the box and hit Search. That is good for all 2ZN-prefix machines above 1750, yours is 3520 The illustration below should be at the top of the list that pops up. $46 for an immediate pdf download, $55 (plus S&H) for a paper version.

    Ok thanks ill do that

  8. #8Cmark2019-06-04 14:38

Definitely transmission temp and not hydraulic temp you're looking at? If so then it's the splitter box that's getting hot. Check its oil level. It only holds a couple of gallons and if it's overfull it will overheat.

  9. #9Andrew012019-06-04 14:41

Ok im planning ok changing all the oil and filters in the whole machine

  10. #10Nige2019-06-04 17:35

Hence my suggestion of an O&M Manual.

  11. #11Andrew012019-06-04 17:51

Ok just check the fluid level at the splitter box it's about an inch and a half over the full mark

  12. #12Cmark2019-06-04 19:32

    Well there's your problem.

  13. #13Andrew012019-06-04 19:36

Lol lets hope im puting new oil and filters on tomorrow night so we shell see

  14. #14Welder Dave2019-06-05 12:56

Outstanding! Who would have thought a little extra oil would cause overheating.

  15. #15Andrew012019-06-05 13:00

Believe that, not me for sure but ill find out if that fixed it tonight doing a full service on her

  16. #16Cmark2019-06-05 18:16

Believe it brother. Let me tell you about a main marine C32 suffering from chronic overheating. After several expensive weeks of troubleshooting, it was discovered that someone had swapped the dipstick with one from one of the gensets, resulting too much oil in the sump. Oh, and the genset was underfull, but no damage luckily. The reason it was found is that someone *raises hand* compared the dipsticks from the port and starboard engines.

  17. #17Andrew012019-06-06 06:07

Really thats crazy at least there was no damage

  18. #18kshansen2019-06-06 09:46

Well if you are doing the full service I hope you took the advice of Nige and downloaded the manual so as to not miss something or get levels worng by checking them in the wrong way or miss a washout filter that may not be obvious. Oh and don't forget to drain water and crap out of the fuel tank, one of the most important steps that gets forgotten!

  19. #19Nige2019-06-06 10:18

Second that. Do you have your O&M Manual yet..? A lack of one in the hands of the previous owner could well be the reason why you found the splitter box over-filled.

  20. #20Andrew012019-06-06 12:19

Yes i got it the same day u gave me the link and i got all new filters from cat and yes planning on doing the tank bc it got some trash in it

  21. #21Nige2019-06-06 13:48

Is it full of useful information..? Do you think it was a good buy..? As CMark commented before, was it the transmission or hydraulic temperature warning that you were seeing..?

  22. #22Andrew012019-06-06 15:36

Yes lots of help and a good buy and the powertrain splitter box / transmission was over full

  23. #23rockyg2021-11-06 20:29

Hi Andrew, Did you resolve the issue of the transmission overheating? I have a 963 21z05651. I have exactly the same problem. Machine runs perfectly but after an hour or so depending on how hard I work the machine the trans temp gauge creeps up and at just under 80c starts to go limp. The drive pump was over full by about an inch on the stick. Drained it to correct level but still the same. Engine temp is spot on. Be interested in how you resolved it. Rick

  24. #24rockyg2021-11-06 21:44

Just to add I’m running TDTO 30 in HPCU and drive pump as advised by cat tech

  25. #25Nige2021-11-07 04:25

What were you using before that.? By any chance did the heating problem start soon after you switched to the TDTO 30.? The recommended oil for both pump drive and HPCU is an SAE10W hydraulic oil.

  26. #26rockyg2021-11-07 06:35

The pump drive 30w which Westrac put in it. In the hpcu I was running 10w but had this problem so contacted cat tech who advised 30w.

  27. #27Nige2021-11-07 07:36

So you had the heating problem before being advised to change from 10W (hydraulic or TDTO?) to the TDTO 30.? Need some input from our resident track loader expert Mr CMark on this one.

  28. #28rockyg2021-11-07 18:18

I suppose the one constant is the tdto 30 in the pump drive.

  29. #29JD955SC2021-11-07 20:08

30wt TDTO is what Someone who is familiar with Cat equipment but not these trackloaders would suggest putting in as many actual Cat transmissions use that but these are a different kettle of fish entirely.

  30. #30Cmark2021-11-08 04:26

We're comparing apples with oranges here. The OP has a 953C. Rockyg has a 963 with the old style hystat tranny. The confusion is arising because the 963 (and also the 973) happen to have a splitter box. It isn't monitored for temperature though. It sounds like he has a tranny (hystat) oil overheating problem.

  31. #31rockyg2021-11-08 06:17

Thanks for clearing that up Cmark. Any ideas on what may be causing the hystat over heating? Rick

  32. #32Cmark2021-11-08 12:55

In order from most likely: Tranny oil cooler (which is part of the radiator pack). Needs to be clean. Also fan belts in good condition and tight. Also no exhaust leaks.

  33. #33rockyg2021-11-08 18:39

Thanks Cmark, I’ll run through those and see how we go.

  34. #34rockyg2021-11-10 08:01

could this be a cause? If so why only the trans oil affected and not engine temp?

  35. #35Cmark2021-11-11 17:31

It's probably not a big enough leak to cause a problem, yet
