955L bucket teeth

Ok guys, green horn here as noted by what you are about to read. Replacing teeth on my 955. What is the proper installation of the tooth? Does the hollow side go up or does it go toward the bottom of the bucket? The ones that were on there had the hollows down but everything i see online indicates the hollows would face the sky. Also, any suggestions on installing the pins while keeping retainer clips/washers in line with the pin hole? TIA.

Hollow side should go up. The one you have installed in the 3rd photo is upside down. If you look on the back side of the tooth you might find TOP or BOTTOM marked on the casting, but they are not necessarily on every Part Number of tooth. Not sure what you mean. The tooth should hold the retainer pretty much in the right place. The bevel on the end of the pin will find its way into the retainer if you take a bit of care. Insert the pin from the opposite side of the tooth to the retainer and beat it the last inch or so into position with a FBH so that the retainer grips on to the groove in the pin. So yes, the pins have a right and wrong way to install. Groove in the pin should be at the retainer end.

The new pins I bought from CAT only has tapers on both ends of the pins. No recess for the retainer to sit in. Part number 1324766 (replaces 1073308) per my receipt.

Did they sell you 149-5733 Retainers to go with the 132-4766.? If so pin goes in either way - too small diameter to have a groove. Knock it in until it pokes out equally on both sides of the tooth.

You got it. I can always count on you Nige. Thanks

I'd be interested to know if there is anything stamped on the back side of the tooth where the two arrows are.

The teeth can be installed either way with the hollow side up is called the runner side and with the solid side up is called the digger side so depends why you are doing as which side is up. Bob

What type of work would call for having the solid side up, or down?

If you want to dig the solid side goes up, like on a tracked loader. If your loading out of a stock pile the solid side can go down like on a wheel loader. Bob

Interesting. Im currently dealing with some rock in a quarry I load out of with my JD590D. Its a type of shale, possibly a distant relative of coal, that digs without blasting but some seams are harder than others. Right now Im struggling to get a bucketfull out of 2 or three scrapes on a 12 foot high, below grade, face.I have chisel shaped teeth like those pictured, hollow side up. I will try inverting them. Also asking for advice on a better type of tooth for this type of digging. Seems like maybe a pointed tooth would be better?

I don't know what type of tooth you are using but you may be able to find a ripper tooth that will fit your shank. Bob

Tiger or twin tiger pointed teeth teeth might work.

I took some pictures of twin tigers and supposed singles for my rock bucket.
