Noticeable leak where the shaft goes into the xmission when running.. hopefully just a seal?? Here are a few Picts of my machine where S/N should be.

See where the arrow is pointing.? The Serial Number plate will be down there but in your case it will be obscured by the front wall of the cab. The photo posted on another thread the machine only had a ROPS fitted. There is a chance that if a plate is actually in that location you might be able to read it with a mirror. What about the engine.? Can you find a S/N plate on that.? I see a Serial Number Plate on the transmission (your last photo). Any details on that you can read.? The 4S8564 Number is the Transmission Arrangement but that doesn't help much. A S/N would narrow it down a tad.

It looks like you might have a chance if you use a phone/camera try to get a good clear straight on shot of where the engine tag use to be about two feet away at regular resolution and no zoom. Bring the picture up on a computer screen and you might, might, might be able to see the shadow of the numbers that were on the tag that you can't see by human eye. I have done this before several times with varying degrees of success. Good luck

Thanks Must be missing something re: uploading the photos you reference? Can't Upload. My Engine serial number is:78P4377 Model 3304, Arraignment #2P6783. Converter S/N: 35T8921, Tranny S/N: 4S8564. On the front firewall between operator and engine there is a steel tag welded to frame. Numbers are as follows: 9K9329 3 and 61363. Also same configuration or rear of machine both sides under fuel tank [ as best as i can read upside down ] 51543; 9K722 and 9K742; 5053 3. Hope that helps, still looking finally good weather today...

Hi Ok got the download on my iPad but not on my desk top? You are correct about the metal over the plate. It is welded on so I will try to work around that. Thanks to all again gretch.

Hey Found it!! Had to cut out an access port. First attempt wrong place. S/N: 85j7056. Now to find a manual. Also what might be up with the leak around the drive shaft? How serious might this be? In the thousands? Haha. Special tools needed, bearings pulled or pressed? Trying to figure out if I can attempt or leave this to the pros? Thanks.

Takes a 5S4408 lip seal. Not a big deal once the coupling is removed but could turn into a bigger job if the seal surface on the coupling is grooved.

Well from the data on that plate at least you know the engine is original.......!! For a Service Manual for 85J7056 you need to be looking for Cat Publication reference REG00634. Like this one - no idea if it's still for sale. - http://service-manual-caterpillar.b...oader_service_repair_shop_manual_reg00634.php New ones are available in paper format for $290, or in CD for $160. If you need a basic Operation & Maintenance Manual you can download one from Cat for $27. I can walk you through the process if you decide to go that route.

Wow you guys are so great! Access to all of your minds and years of experience. The one thing in life i should be charged for in life and i am not... Thanks. Got the manuals. looked through the archives and found Nige's explanation on how to download. A cat person said the big book is almost three hundred dollars and no pop up mechanic with it. Looks like i will be going that way Mr. Nige. The weather is kinda grim now so in a couple of days. Any specialty tools? Pick to pull the seal? Please let me know. Thanks Gretch

No snap ring involved unless your going after the front bearing.

Ok guys who is ready to walk me through the process of changing the seal? Got some help from another post here. See changing seal on xmission side... Very helpful have all illustrations. Just need a shadow watching over.[More like a large ANGEL]. Any takers?? Gretch Iam sure it will not be a quick ordeal. More like a laborious step by step.

Any tips on keeping the drive shaft from rotating while loosening or tightening the bolts on the balancer?
