963 engine rebuild cost

tnc110 ยท 2014-09-25 17:57

1990 963 loader. Low oil pressure light kept coming on... Previous owner said he thought it was a bad sending unit. Well today it developed a knock. Oil was 3 gallons low. As i was filling the oil white smoke was coming out the fill tube. So. ... what is it going to cost to have it rebuilt?

I can't answer on the cost but I know what our resident mechanic's are going to ask first -what's the serial number.

Factory Reman Long Block (basically everything you need bar a turbo) is $10,000 in round numbers. I'd guess an independent would probably do the engine overhaul for somewhere around half that. I may be off base on that number though. The turbo would be $600-ish Reman.

All depends what the insides measure out at, and if you go OEM or aftermarket, and if you have damaged cores, maybe 5k, maybe 8k. Just a ( off the top of my head ) estimate.

Do these prices include pulling motor? How many hours to pull?

The prices I mentioned are parts only, no labour.

Can the bottom end of the motor be replaced in frame or does the motor have to be pulled.

You have to flip the cab and pull the engine.

Over the years I have rebuilt quite a few engines and it has been my experience that it is far from wise to try and save money by doing half of a rebuild. Think about the overal operaltion. Each time a cylinder fires, energy is trying to push the crankshaft through the bottom of the block or blow the head off the block. Bolts and heavy castings convert the force to spin that is coupled to the converter/trans/gearbox. If you refresh one, the other side is weaker. If you plan to keep working the loader, I recommend shopping around for a price from a dealer or quality machine shop to find the best for you in your area. Then pull the engine and have a pro strip it down, acid bathe it, measure everything and rebuild with genuine parts. Then have it run in on a dyno. That should give you at least 15 years of service if maintained. Expensive?? Yes. Costly over the long run?? Not that much if you go the cheap route and it blowns up in the middle of an easy money project. Something to think about.

I have been a wrench on HE for 25 years prior to moving careers, overhaul mans just that, complete overhaul, to do just a crank or just bearings is asking for upper end issues, to do a re-ring and not sleeves you invite heavy oil consumption in short order. I have seen any and every method to save a few bucks only to cost double the initial expense over a very short period of time and as well have seen poorly assembled reman engines explode with little to no warranty value. Pick a good mechanic with reputable reviews or recommends, pick your poison as to overhauling the old block or exchange unit, do not scrimp or you will regret it every day the machine lays down.

The engine in that chariot is the 3304, this is a very easy engine to to rebuild, plus the parts can be found none O.E. like I.P.D. etc, the engine is not a hard thing to pop out of the frame as the cab tilts and all the engine panels are simple to strip off. tctractors

Too much to list on what we did on this D342 but we started with the right man on the spanners and a large wallet.Nearly 14k (sterling) on parts and labour(18,000 dollors?). Has been very busy since it was done. You get what you pay for.

Tnc, I don't know what you are set up to do, 963 is pretty easy to work on if you have the ability, 3304 / 3306 is a very simple engine design to rebuild, a guy with a lifting device and a good head of steam can have the engine out in a few hours, if you go with OEM reman cylinder packs, and a after market head and crank, its a bit easier for a novice as you wount have to mess with piston ring compressor and such, if its your first engine to rebuild, this is the best one to do. There are also tons of after market parts also. CTP also sells cylinder kits already together for this application. The geartrain and pump timing is simple, crank seals need installers, even if you have to throw it in the back of your pickup and have a dealer or truck shop set the seals. Overworked

overworked, I can understand you thoughts for the jobbing mechanic on the piston liner cylinder packs, but I wound not touch them at any cost as there is a fair bit of detail to sort before pistons are fitted, the gear train including the Lanchester style ballance shafts can baffle plenty of folk, the injector pump is fairly straight forward to set, the crank pulley can be tough to remove without the correct tooling, plus the seals as you have said need the tooling or a bit of brainwork to set home, the 3304 compaired to lots of other engines can be difficult units to work on, like anything if you know what you are up to its easy? tctractors

Tc, points well taken, and yes you need to know what to look for after spreading out the bits, I feel if your going to start they are a good one to work with. Overworked
