Hello, I run a 988f series 2. The other day I was back blading a haul road that was about a football field in length. The torque converter and engine temperature gauges both climbed almost to the red. The engine and torque both seem to operate fine except when you work the machine hard then the gauges start to climb. Coolant, engine oil, transmission oil are all full and have been changed within the past week. Any ideas where to start troubleshooting this? Thanks.
Which one started climbing first.? Converter or coolant.? Start by cleaning the exterior of the radiator maybe.? This might require it to be removed because with the hard use over the top of it access is not the greatest.
I power washed the cooler out. The torque temp seems to climb first and because the coolant transfers the heat from the converter it drags the engine temp up too. I don’t notice any issue with the converter, the lock up clutch works and the variable capacity lever works as well.
Converter temperature climbing could indicate a converter issue. Coolant temperature climbing and not coming down definitely indicates a cooling issue. Do you have an infra-red thermometer.? If so check the temps of the radiator inlet & outlet when the gauges are in the red and post your results.
Will do, thanks.
Just go this on a 1998 988Fs2 last week Was the engine fan pump, fan was not turning at full speed .
Just a follow up on this, the splines on the fan pump were wore off. Both the drive coupling and pump shaft were damaged. Replaced both components and fan turns as it should.
Thanks for telling us what was wrong. Simon C
