I have a bucket wearing through the outside layer or steel on the outside that needs to be repaired. Original plan was to replace the outer layer that is worn though and has dirt packed behind it, with 1/4 mild steel. Then run 5" wide 1/2' mild steel flatbar up the sides and then add wear bars across it.
Basically like this.
Im now thinking that id be wasting my time using mild steel even if i put hardfacing on it. I am looking for a local source of AR400 flatbar to make the wear strips but what about the base layer? i think it was originally 3/8 ar400 but the only way i can think tp bend it is by cutting 7/8 of the way through it and welding it back up. then im adding so much weld i know it would crack id just have to keep an eye on it. Any input would be appreciated. I have never welded ar 400 before. Would a 300* preheat and 7018 filler be sufficient?
If you can find a place to bend/roll the AR plate make them some templates and have it formed before you attack the rebuild of the bucket. 7018 or a good fluxcore wire would work. Look up posts by TomV or the iron oracle. They do that often and have lots of into on their threads. You'll have to buy the AR in plate form and cut your wear bars as well as the size you want formed. Hope that helps....
Just rebuilt this bucket .floor is rolled ar400 ,wear bar is 3/4"x4" ar400
I am not sure where locally i can get the plate rolled but i will look into that, Im thinking i need to buy a whole piece of 3/8 ar400 and just use that for the the bottom and the wear bars. This machine shouldnt need any more than that.
Where you buy it should be able to help you find someone to bend it
