was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to why the tranny in our 5175 grove is making alot of heat going down hill (when you are trying to cool everything down) im not using the trans retarder, converter is staying locked up so no slippage, i talked to the tranny shop the other day and they seemed stumped so i figured maybe some of the brilliant minds on here might have the answer. thanks for the help guys
Does your Grove have a cooler bypass valve? Without knowing the specifics about your model, the valve will have either both cooler lines going to it and then onto the cooler. Or in the converter out line and a hose leading to the cooler out line. This valve bypasses cool oil around the cooler until the trans comes up to operating temp. Helps in cooler climates where the ambient air gets pretty cold.
i will have to check on that on tuesday.... the confusing part is that it will actually cool down somewhat on a long uphill grade as long as im in a low enough gear to keep the engine from heating up
