Avoid Western Diesel aka Western Diesel Wholesale

I hate sounding like a whiner but my Dad (he runs a pretty good size repair shop) had a real headache with these guys and I'd gladly save you the hastle. Here's the story. Customer brings in Series 60 Detroit for rebuild. Upon tearing down they find the head is worn out so he starts shopping for a new one. Wally at Western Diesel in Saskatoon, Sk is very helpful and Dad can live with the price so he purchases one from him. New sleeves and pistons and bearings are installed as well as the new head. Lots of other stuff is done as part of the rebuild, plasti-guage bearings etc. Engine rebuild is completed and fluids filled. Engine starts beautifully and runs like a charm for half an hour when it STOPS. Upon turning the engine over it appears to have a tight spot so the mechanics get right back at it and starts tearing it down and this is what they find. The new/rebuilt head had dropped a valve. It also became very obvious that the faulty valve had shattered because the valve stem had been much too tight in the sleeve. Ok stuff like this happens everyday, we all make mistakes. Western Diesel though is not honoring their parts. Dad has called many of his buddies in the engine rebuilding industry including one of Detroit's own engine experts and they all say faulty head. Western Diesel has gone from being friendly when purchasing to hostile now. It's actually getting funny the stuff they're coming up with. One time they told him they knew more about Detroit engines the Detroit's own expert did. The next time it was that Detroit's repair manual was wrong. And since this has happened others have come forward and told their stories too. Prices are decent, sales staff is friendly, but don't ever have a problem because they don't care. So Dad is just finishing up the second rebuild and swallowing the price of another new head. This one is a Detroit factory reman and amazingly was cheaper than Western Diesel's. And that's the story. Just posting this so you know what you're dealing with when you purchase from them. I'm definitely not trying to smear them or get even just save all my buddies at HEF a headache. Take care

Hard to pass judgement from these pics but what I see is a issue with lubrication........ lack of. Do any of the other valves show signs of galding or sticking in the guides oe is it just THIS cylinder? I have seen valves with tight guides before and seen valves seize in guides from lack of lube oil....... this looks to me like lack of lube oil.
