bobcat hb 880 980 breakers

bobcatmechanic ยท 2008-04-12 11:07

bobcat has a problem with the hb880 and hb980 breakers there is a distrubuition ring in the internals of the breaker that is cracking and causing the breaker to hit eratically or a few times then stop or not at all if you encounter this and your breaker is not under warranty ask your dealership for warranty assistance since there is a problem with them we have had 2 come in in the past week same problem and i guess its wide spread the ring is said acorrding to the book to be replaced every 500 hrs of service why i dont know but thats what bobcat says there is also a rubber isolation bushing that is said to be replaced at the same time the rebuild kits are about 800 to 1000 dollars and they are needed when you replace the ring because it comes with all new seals always use new seals they say that dry firing is what is causing the rings to break but i doubt it bobcat is checking into this problem and with probably have a field mod for all affected breakers in the future so just an fyi

I am sure glad I never bought a Bobcat hammer! I love my Daemo 725 pounder!

Who builds that breaker for BC?

bobcatmechanic is correct about these regulator rings. I went through this about 18 months ago, experiencing multiple failures on HB880's, but I hadn't seen it for a while. The breakers, in Bobcat's defense, are IMO pretty good and the easiest and fastest to work on, relative to any other brand in my experience. No high-torque high-dollar side rods an bolts, and two simple, cheap special tools. And ALL breakers break, that's why they're called breakers. These models sold by Bobcat are (were?) a Montebert Silver-Clip, and I think it was bought and sold by Ingersoll-Rand, but who owns what now is beyond my processing speed and capacity.

yeah ingersal rand sold out to a korean company yeah they are pretty easy to work on and if you have the parts you can have them apart and back together in a 8hr shift there really aren't any special tools needed except a 3/8 allen socket other than that they are simple to tear down and get back together we test our breakers on a old junk bucket as we do not have a concrete slab to test on the 880 is a dog next to the 980 the 880 took forever to punch through the 1/4 inch steel the 980 it seemed like 2 blows and it was through also the 980 would tear the steel right away from the welds i broke out the entire back in about 5 min so they are good breakers they just have a few bugs to work out

I have a question on a 773 turbo bobcat. Can you turn up the motor for a little more horsepower?

  7. #7bobcatmechanic2008-04-18 19:59

yeah you can turn them up for more horse power but you dont want to go to far

  8. #8lew2008-04-19 11:13

To anyone who can answer this question. Our 773 turbo bobcat just had a set of rubber tracks added to it which allows us to do a lot more with the machine but it take some power away from the machine. can we get that power back safely without harming the motor.

  9. #9bobcat ron2008-04-19 11:18

No, when you put tracks on a skid steer that originaly has tires, you will get less power because you are now adding a huge amount of traction with the tracks and the drive motors weren't designed to take that. Cat and Case have the right idea now, they are offering a larger drive motor kits for their skids when you get the Loegering VTS set up.

The vts tracks are what we are trying out right now. The problem is that we are better operators than mechanics so we dont know what the effects are going to be on that machine from putting those tracks on. We dont want to buy a machine that is tracks only because we like the option of putting tires back on in the winter. Kinda like having to machines all in one. got any suggestions we aren't opposed to trading in for the right size machine that can handle a set of tracks. We just like the slightly smaller machines for tight quarters.

if you like bobcat go with a s250 or s300 the s175 s185 s205 are all the same machine in size all bobcat does is put a bigger motor or turn up the one thats in there or put a turbo motor in so really regardless of the number on the side the small frame are all the same size the mediums are all the same size and the large are all the same size but the s250 and s300 are more powerful and you can turn those up easy and the power you get is great the factory allows 15% increase over their settings with out voiding the warranty but the 250 300 are heavier and push alot better stay away from the bobcat track loaders though they still have problems with the drive motors the wheel machines are ok just my :my2c if you like cat or case johndeere go for it.

Is Bobcat still having issues with the drive motors on the CTL's??????? Now that really bothers me, I thought that would have been resolved.

From my experience, recently (read last week), yes. My T250 had both drive motors replaced about a year ago - under warranty. I had the machine on a job about 2 hours away from home base and the right drive motor developed a leak- again, this was last Thursday.:Banghead We brought it home, parked it and took the 953C down ( a bit overkill for the job but it is a tight time schedule). We have put about 500 hours on it since the drive motors were replaced last year. We have not broken it down yet to see if it is a seal or a what. My mechanic is on his second week of his 2 weeks a year with the Guard, so I should know something about it as soon as he gets back.

Hi guys...looking to upgrade my hydraulic breaker...currently/orginal is hb680 bobcat stricker....I believe it's really a tremac. It is speciality tool that does not get a lot of hrs maybe 100 hrs yr but I charge a daily rate and it leads to more work. I have upgraded to bobcat e32...17gpm aux. Current jobs all seem to find thick 10"-12" concrete. I have had really good luck with BC/tremac. I have rented hb880 and hb980. Found 980 was too big, but really like 880. Any thoughts? Have all the bugs been worked out since comments back in 2008? I really like BCat xattach/quick attach so getting different Brand is not simple or cheap. Thxs
