Boom lift ram seals on a 312b cat

Hi all, just got to the Bahamas again, got the machine running and now both ram seals for the boom have started leaking!! Just done the seals on the JCB last time I was here, last April... I was wondering if any kind person would know what the part no. Is for the seals? I believe there is a cat dealer in Nassau and could get the parts shipped nearer to me. The machine is a cat312b, 1998, s/n 9hr02634. Thanks for any help. Cheers Malcs

Hey Malc, seal kit is 119-5435 - obviously you'll need one seal kit per cylinder. Shown as available in Cat Regional Parts Warehouse Miami - $200 in round numbers.

Are there ant special tools needed to change the seals and is there anything I need to look out for?

Do you have the stuff to remove the piston nut? A really big pipe wrench? Other than that screw drivers and seal picks is all you need.

Malc, you'll probably need to fabricate a spanner to get the piston nut off if you don't have a large enough socket. A piece of 1" plate with a hexagon cut in it would work for a machine that size. Anchor the rod using the pin that holds it in the machine to stop it turning and support it on timber so the chrome doesn't get scratched. Another thought is if you have a shipyard close by they should have something that will be useful to get the nut off and back on again. Also make sure you take careful note of how the seals are installed regarding orientation and make sure the replacements go in the same way. PM me with an e-mail address if you want the procedure for disassembly of the cylinder

Yeh I have a big wrench etc, the ram doesn't have a nut on but three cut outs around it. I was wondering if you needed a tool for that or just give it a good slap with a sledge and a bar in these cut outs to turn it?

Sent you the procedure. I would suggest knocking up a "C" spanner from a piece of plate to get the head off (good slap with a sledge still applies), and there's a lock on it you need to get off first before trying to loosen it. The head will be tight, the piston nut even tighter..............

Just an update...... Got a 48" pipe wrench brought over from US this morning......12' metal pipe and a bit of strength and bang the ram was apart....hung the ram back on the rod and used same method to remove the nut on end....all in bits now waiting for seals.....ordered Monday, still haven't come yet......just over $1000 with duty and taxes....hope they come first thing or I will have to put it all back together again to protect it against the weather etc until I get out here again............so frustrating!!!!!!!!!!! Could have taken a plane to Miami, got parts for $221 each, put them in bag and come back to Bahamas for same price!!!! At least we would have had them by now!!
