Case 188 diesel keeps quitting

I have a case 188 diesel on a 350b dozer that is kind of acting like it's running out of fuel but not exactly. It will start right up, run for 1 minute or less and slowly idle down until it stalls, then start right back up and do it all over. Since it will start right back up I am guessing that it is not actually out of fuel or have air in the system. I have checked the lines to see they are flowing, changed both filters and replaced the fuel, nothing changed. Someone said to check the return line check valve, but I don't have a manual and don't know where that is. My guess would be the engine is not receiving enough supply to the injector pump to keep running , but I have never torn a 188 apart to even know if there is a fuel pump on the block. If anyone has had similar experiences with any diesel or with a 188 please throw in any info you have. Thanks

Your return check valve is plugged up with flakes from the governer dampner inside the injection pump. The injection pump will need to be rebuilt at some time to replace the dampner. To get the machine running you can remove the check valve, knock the check ball and spring out, clean out the debris and reinstall the empty check valve fitting.

Thanks for the info, it sounds like you have some direct experience with this. Can you tell me how to get to the check valve. Is it under the top cap where the return line enter/exits the unit? Any chance you know of a good place to send the unit for repairs?

The check valve is between tee # 33 and the injection pump. Remove the return line from the tee and remove the tee. Remove the check valve and in the bottom you will see a glass ball. Break out the ball and remove the spring above it and clean out the fitting good and reassemble.

Yep.My IH td 15 had a small kink in the return line and debries built up in the kink and shut the dozer down. When we blew the obstruction out with the air hose ,it looked like a small bug or beatle of some kind.I think all the roosa-master rotery pumps will shut down when the return side is restricted.
