My Case 435 has developed a noticeable difference in the force required to move the control lever forward and back on the left side to control my speed of travel. I've removed the linkage back to the spool and the linkage moves easily once disconnected but the flat sided bolt that is the top of the spool (i think) won't move even with an adjustable on there. There's significant resistance. Would anyone know, is this normally an issue with the spool itself or is it a hydrostatic motor issue?
Is the valve supposed to turn, or pull in and out. Flat sided bolt sounds like the spool. If the linkage is fine, it sounds like the spool is sticking in the valve bore.
If cable or linkage is totally free, might be into exploratory surgery. Simon C
The spool seems to turn about 15 degrees left or right off 90 and theres a spring with 2 legs that return it to centre when you let go of the lever. There appears to be a cap over the spool that the flat threaded bolt comes through. Not sure if that lifts up or not. Its not described very well in the manual and didn't want to force it.
Do these spools normally pull straight out?
Connect the linkage and spray a good brand of penetrating oil around the area where the linkage goes and work the lever back and forth and you should get it to work freely.
I gave it a good soak of WD40 and got no movement but I might need to get something a bit more lubricating.
WD 40 is good for help in starting engines, good at removing some types of glues and stains, but to help free it up I use Lloyds Moovit penetrating oil, or Deep Creep penetrating oil. something like that. Simon C
I don't think rust is the problem - there is foreign material caught between the spool & the sleeve. The spool should just pull out easliy with your fingers. Unfortunately, you will need to force it out & inspect the damage. Some oil will usually come out when the spool is withdrawn, hopefully whatever is causing the problem will come out with it....
Thanks for the info, it seems pretty stuck so hopefully it doesn't damage the spool or housing when I'm working it out. Thanks again
When you go to pull it out, the outer sleeve will come out together with the spool. Then you can tap the spool out of the sleeve. The outer sleeve is directional - meaning it has a slot in the bottom which has to engage a locating pin & the spool has a small dimple on the very top - take note of where they are & re-install the same way. Goes without saying, there is oring & back-up seals on both items that will need replacing. Both items are made of very hard steel - so hopefully the damage is minimal. CNH seem to think these are gold plated as well ....... And hopefully, whatever has caused the tightness, isn't indicating a bigger problem for you.
In case anyone has this issue again, just posting to tell what I found. There is a cap (23 in the diagram above) which covers the spool. The spool consists of an outer sleeve 29 and inner spool 26. The inner spool rotates in the outer sleeve with the threaded section protruding through the cap which attaches to the linkage to the joy stick. The upper part of the inner spool was seized with rust where it passes through the cap. It took a bit of tapping to knock it out, then I used a micro sanding cylinder on the drill to clean the cap and a light sanding paper to clean the upper shaft of the spool. Changed the O rings, lubricated and put back. You could twist it with your fingers after the repair. And joystick moves smoothly.
