Case 450

Motox934 ยท 2014-06-04 20:05

We got a 450 case dozer from an auction a few weeks ago and i got on it and did some things and noticed it sometimes just went randomly out of gear and had to wait a little for it to go back into gear. After a while of messing around on it and tightening the tracks and greasing up stuff i figured out its only going up an incline that it goes out. But itll make it up the incline backwards? I filled up the hydrolics fluid cause i thought it was the problem at first but nothing. Anyone have suggestion?

Check the trans fluid level,if I remember right there is a stick under the seat!

You will need to lift the seat bottom out and I believe you will see everything you need. The hydraulic tank, and trans are not the same fluid.

Dipstick for transmission should be where carriage head bolt is sticking up. Chris

The hyd tank holds about 7.5 gal, the trans holds around 8 gal total of a case TCH spec fluid, a good 303 oil or a trans/converter/hyd oil that also meets the TCH spec. Do not put a straight hyd oil in the transmission. You should also check the final drive on each side, it holds around 6-qt in each side, 85/140 gear lube, there is a check plug to remove and a drain plug at the bottom. I use a 12" long tie strap to bend and dip the oil level if it does not run out when the check plug is removed.

    Which is which?

I also have a case 450. I bought NAPAs hydraulic/trans fluid that meets case's hy tran and TCH requirements. Trying to find actual TCH fluid seems almost impossible unless you have a case dealer close. Even then, I don't know if they would have any TCH fluid as I have been under the assumption that it was superseded by hy tran.

    This the dipstick?

  12. #12sheepfoot2014-06-05 18:38

Well looks like you need to get a dipstick, someone should have a measurement to get you going so you can at least check the level. You add fluid in the same hole the dipstick comes out of for the transmission, your hyd tank is at your rh side near your elbow sitting in the seat. The two systems don't mix, hyd tank is for the blade, angle, tilt if you have that setup. The trans case holds the fluid for the trans/ converter/ trans oil cooler. The final drives are attached to the trans case on each side, they are sealed so trans fluid does not mix with the gear lube in the final drive housings. If while checking the oil level in the final drives and you have way to much oil, you could have a issue that needs attention, the same if the finals are low on oil you could have axle seal that needs attention.

Is maybe the other thing the dipstick cause i looked Up parts and on a 450C that is the dipstick that rond nob. But the round nob just spins and doesnt come off. Should i just put some trans/hydrolic fluid down the hole on the screw thing i took off? I wanna fix this issue before the weekend what could i try first

Any more suggestions on this problem anyone?

The bolt you removed from the transmission is where the dipstick is supposed to be, but apparently yours was lost and replaced with a plug. The round thing next to that bolt is a breather. I do not know the length of the dipstick off the top of my head but can measure one for you tomorrow so you can make one. Good luck. Chris

I'm not familiar with that machine, but that carriage bolt thing you took out looks like a shade tree rig to keep dirt out of the place where the (missing) dipstick goes. The round yellow object looks like a breather/vent.

The only other thing you can do is drain the trans oil and refill it with about 6 1/2 to 7 gallons of trans oil. This will get you close to the full mark until you get a new dipstick to check it by.

Can you do that please? If i get the lenght what do i do? Make one or go buy a dipstick that lenght? How much is that one on the diagram?

Hi, I was just wondering if you had ever found a solution for this problem? I am having the exact same issue.

Welcome to HEF, Dano ! Did you check the trans. oil level ? The 450's have both a suction line screen and filter in hydraulic system.

is there site or maybe its here to get a break down on Case 450 models and years via serial numbers?? and wieght seems like there isnt a good place to find the actual weight of these machines, now on the JD 450s they list wieght but was told the JD machines are a lot bigger than the Case one thanks
