Working on Case Super L Series 2 Loader Backhoe - The transmission works proper in forward but when put in reverse it works fine for about 5 seconds then disengages like it is in neutral. The trans does not slip it just disengages. When it is put back in forward then back to reverse it will do the same thing each time working correct for 5 seconds then disengages. If it is put in neutral then back to reverse it does not re-engage it has to be put in forward then back to reverse. Seems like some type of timed switch is bad as it always works properly for 5 seconds. Any help with this problem is welcome. Already changed the shuttle interlock timing relay and it did not help.
Welcome to HEF RonnieG! You have not stated if it is a shuttleshift or powershift. Assuming it is a shuttle (reference to 'shuttle' timing relay) - you need to check the transmission control valve & if the reverse solenoid has power at all times while selected. This will confirm an electrical problem or a hydraulic one. :drinkup
alrman The trans is shuttleshift and I will check the trans control valve this afternoon - any more info on checking this valve will be helpful.
Try looking at this thread, which refers to a few others - They discuss various problems related to the shuttle transmission with pics that I'm sure will help.
Thanks alrman What puzzles me is it operates normal in foward but only in reverse is when it disengages after about 5 seconds.
Yes that puzzles me also, that's why I suggested to test the electrics at the control valve to see if the electrics are at fault or not. Don't discount the reverse coil, at the control valve, to be at fault either. You can compare it to forward as they are the same.
Did not have time this afternoon to check the control electrics - I had to put the suttle shift FNR lever back in as I took it out to test (tested OK) will check tomorrow. Do you know which coil is the reverse coil? Also in the relay/ fuse block there is a relay behind or beside the block (connected to the block by a bolt) right behind the warning buzzer - this relay is not listed on the relay/ fuse panel door decal and I cannot find it in my parts book - do you know what this relay is for? Part number on relay 931 299 02 - it may just be the flasher/ turn signal relay.
The fwd & rev coils are side by side. The reverse should be the outer one, closest to the retaining nut. You will know for sure when testing...... Not sure about the relay you are describing - a picture would help.
