Case 580CK Construction King question

dstankus ยท 2013-07-08 14:22

I have recently been told that the original Case 580CK Construction King TLB with the 'suicide sticks' (one stick for each of the following - right outrigger, bucket, dipper, boom, left outrigger) were designed to only allow the boom or the dipper to move by themselves and not together - can anyone confirm or deny this? This model did have as an option more modern controls where more than one function could be controlled with a stick - but I have the single sticks on my 1969 580CK. I am wondering if the machine is broken or if its working as designed and I can stop spending money to try to get this to do something it was never intended to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to HEF dstankus :drinkup There really is no real hydraulic difference between the 3 stick foot slew & two (wobble) stick controls. The problem is most likely a oil flow problem. You have 40-50 yr old machine, that likely has a tired hydraulic pump & leakage in the control valve. If you pull any of the BH control levers & hold them on relief - do any other circuits begin to move? You will need to do some hydraulic testing to confirm your pump power & flow. 1) test main relief pressure. 2) flow test pump.

The primary release valve lets go at 2200 psi which seems to be exactly right - I will check the flow test next.

From the Case Service manual - Actuating More Than One Cylinder If two spools are actuated at the same time, the cylinder meeting with the least resistance will move first and continue to move until it meets with more resistance than the other cylinder. Example: The stabilizer spools are at opposite ends of the valve bank. When both spools are pulled, both stabilizers will retract. However, if a man stands on one stabilizer pad, the opposite cylinder will move until it bottoms out. Then the other cylinder will retract. So it looks like practicing moves in the air (without any resistance) is really not possible.

With practice you will be able to use multiple functions together by moderating how far you pull the stick.

I have the exact same machine. You want decent oil flow when digging, so rev up with the handle throttle when using the hoe. Try lower rpm first until you get the hang of it. With a bit of experience, you will figure out which spool gives priority and adjust accordingly. The machine has its limits as well, but is very versatile due to its size. I've owned mine for over 25 years and it sure beats a pick and shovel or wheelbarrow! Jess
