Machine serial 9151904 Engine numbers 336BD 10350323 Head gaskets were leaking to the outside. I pulled the heads off and sent to have surfaced and checked for cracks. Guy said didnt find any cracks and werent warped. So i ordered new gaskets from case and put back together. Now the water runs out of the first head. The old gaskets had been leaking around the head bolts and someone put lots of stop leak in it. I am assuming i need shims. How do i determine what thickness i need. ? Or do i need to do something else? Thanks any help would be appreciated.
Well first thing re torque the head to 210 ft. lbs. and watch it for a bit and see if it seals. After that it's pull the head, recheck block surface, measure the fire dam diameter on the two sleeves under each head, could be a newer sleeve with a older sleeve and the fire dam sizes are not the same. While your there it's best to use the correct tool to tighten the sleeve down to around 50 ft. lbs., you then need to check the block to sleeve height with a dial indicator in four different spots around the liner, .000-.006 is about where you want them, this takes a special tool to cut the deck height, shim thickness is around .005 and .010, and to correct this the engine should/will have to come out to remove the piston rod and sleeve. Liner inspection for cracks and pin/pit holes will also need to be done, and inspection of lower chamfer for rust/pitting that will effect the O-rings to seal after reinstall, this area may need to be cut and sleeved also. A crack between the cylinder sleeve area and even a crack in the head bolt threaded holes could cause water leakage. How long have you owned this machine and do you have any past service info on the engine?. Most will need a set of sleeves when you open them up, some will move the sleeves 1/4 turn to move a non pitted surface between the liners. I would not do this myself. Liners must go back in the same bore due to the deck height issue if it was done correct before so keep them in the same bore to reinstall. New liners have to be checked also on install also. Should have also said to look for liner shims when ever pulling and old set out.
Thanks sheepfoot. I pulled it back apart today. Second headed was leaking also just couldnt tell . The firering on the gasket is not big enough to go around the sleeve. As best i could measure its about a 16th of an inch to small. The number that is on the gasket that i have is 1349077C1
head gasket The head gasket 1349077c1 is for the sleeve with the 5.092-5.097 fire dam size, the 1349078c1 head gasket fits the 5.180-5.194 fire dam. I would pull the other head and measure the other fire dams on each liner also. Did you have any luck pulling down the liner and checking the deck height to the block ?. I would also try to find a caliper to measure them just to be sure it's with in spec.
Sheepfoot i believe you just solved my problem. The fire dam i have is 5.180.. I did talk to case and he told me there was another gasket but what he sent me is what it called for. I am calling back in the morning and give measurements of fire dam. He was gonna have on of their techs measure the diameter of fire ring on the other gasket that is listed. I did check hight of sleeve it was the same in 4 spots.
