I ran one for years and it was a good machine except for the articulation.Ron G
This machine has and still is very successful in Brazil. The first versions, in the 80s, were powered with Perkins engine. From the 90s, it started to use Cummins engine until nowadays. Indeed the fact that the operator be at the front of the joint is something that bothers the bumps and was perhaps the only fact responsible for not making it a unanimity among the best of wheel loaders market where competing with models like the Caterpillar 930 ( 930T and 930R), Michigan 55C, Fiatallis 1500B / 1900B, among others. The success of the Case W20 was so great that from 1980 to today, yes, today, in 2016, it is still being produced and marketed by Case Construction in Brazil and is one of the most sold and most prestigious in the market, the fact does not have embedded electronics combining simplicity, productivity and conviabilidade, with a very low cost of operation and maintenance. The success of Case W20 in Brazil is so large that its successor, the Case 621D, still can not overcome it in sales. A curiosity about Case W20 is the nickname given to him (yes, equipment that are or have been successful in the country end up being dubbed "affectionately" by its owners and fans, like Volkswagen "Constelation" is called SpongeBob). As the letter "W" in Portuguese has pronunciation (phonetics) very similar to the word "devil" in the same language (Diabo in Portuguese), many people call the Case W20 of "Diabo Vinte" or in English "Devil Twenty", referring to an idea machine "demonized," to be strong, agile, fast, cunning features that the devil would use to persuade, convince or deceive humans, as some religions.
The machine is very robust and would be highly recommended if not for that one design flaw shared by the Hough/Dresser loaders as well.I have many hours in the W-20,even plowing snow.Ours had a cab on it and heat etc.We also ran over size tires on ours to give a little more height for loading trucks. The Cummins power was a big plus, the machine never failed to start in any weather. If it ever needed to be jumped the batteries are at waist level at the rear of the machine.Just open the grill which is hinged in front of the radiator and there they are. That does make them handy if you ever have to jump start something else.Ron G
Sorry, I´m wrong!!! The first versions of Case W20 in Brazil was powered by Mercedes-Benz engine called OM-352A (6 cilinders with 5.675 litres and 146 HP @ 2500 RPM of net power / DIN 6270). This machine had hidraulic brakes in wheels and air in the foot.
