so i recently found out about this forum via google search. and i found out that the seal atop the cooling fan motor could be replaced. i have a cat 246 and we were having a problem with the fan motor spraying oil all over the place when it reached a certain temperature. once pinpointed i did a search on google and came to these forums . it was a article about the same thing. only difference is i have the thing apart sitting on the table now and the seal is on the way from cat. the part number for the skid steer is ( 216-6163 MOTOR GP-GEAR ). that is the hydraulic fan motor. however the problem that i have atm is the red figure 8 seal that is just below the top of the motor and below it. attached is a picture of the broken seal. if anyone knows where i can get that seal i would really appreciate it. i mean (REALLY) appreciate it. i have searched high and low. i have tried cat , i called them, looked at the website, and tried google. i really dont want to sped 650$ for a new motor. this one just needs new seals....
What's the serial number of the machine?
5SZ02611
Pretty sure that's a Bosch AZMF motor. No idea how to match it.
Seconded. No seal kit available from Cat. The motor is classed as "not repairable". Because it's manufactured for Cat by an outside supplier the chances of finding aftermarket repair parts for it are slim to none IMHO. I don't know what others think but usually in my experence once the seals let go it means that the motor itself is pretty well shot anyway. Bear in mind that the motor (if it's the original) is 20 years old. Also that motor was only used on machines S/N up to 5SZ03999. Above that it was replaced by a more robust 188-0128 motor. "The flanges were redsigned to eliminate leaks". Fan motors only became serviceable after machine 5SZ07336.
I to am coming up empty. Looked for Hyd motor repair sites and they want at least half of original cost and none have listed your P/N. Did notice someone (my guess you) submitted parts request and spareparts.com. Do be wary and if it is you make sure to only use credit cards, many want paypal and there would be no protection if used
yeah i didnt submit anything to spare parts. however i did look into finding an answer on other forums and no replies as of yet. however i do appreciate the attempt on finding a solution on my behalf. so the question is now... if they replaced this motor with a beefier one which one is that? ( talking about what nieg said) and if it is a beefier version is it 100 percent compatible? and heymccall did you say that it is a bosch motor ? if so is there a way to find out if they have a repair kit do you think? also @neig the motor internals besides those two figure 8 seals looks fine, i dont see any wear or tear on the gears nor the channels at all. and again ill say this. thank you all for the help so far. noone found replacement gaskets/seals for it yet but i do try to stay optimistic. hopefully i can find a cheap replacement at worst case scenario.
In SIS the P/N is the same, so if they changed the part its not in the history. I would verify with CAT but think the motor is the same as the one you have. In KY the price is $668.96 and its in Canton OH
If I can clarify a little. 216-6163 is the fan motor used on machines with S/N from 5SZ1-3999. It is not rebuildable. Currently 216-6163 is at Change Level 02 which in effect means it is the 3rd iteration of that particular Part Number with Change Level 00 being the original. Changes have been made to the motor but those changes still do not make it repairable. From machines 5SZ4000-7335 there are two options for fan motor depending on the hydraulic arrangement fitted to the machine, 216-6163 and 188-0128. Like 216-6163, 188-0128 (also currently Change Level 02) is not repairable. From machines 5SZ7336-Up the fan motor is a 216-6193 (very similar part number but a completely different motor) but that P/N is not directly interchangeable with the motors fitted to machines from 5SZ1-7335. A 278-8716 Seal Kit is available for 216-6193.
so from what i can see there is only 3 lines that hook up to this motor. there is the in and out plus the (what i believe to be ) a cooling line too. it is small so idk what it is for. but where im at now is... i have to find a replacement motor. so i looked online and i have only found 2 sources for replacements. one is the cat site which it comes directly from cat itself. and that costs $645. and the other is more expensive and it is used at $706.00. do you have any suggestions as to where i can find one brand new ? or is there a motor i can order that will work with those same lines that will do the same job? like an after market motor? just wondering because i dropped off a motor today to get it looked at and see if it can be replaced with a cheaper version of it.the man quoted me saying that he can find one for possibly half the price but i will have to wait and see if that's true.
The three lines are - feed, return, & overflow. The motor has a relief valve built into the body. The fan motor will rotate in direct relation to the amount of hydraulic oil flow until the hydraulic oil pressure reaches the setting for the relief valve. This is to limit the maximum motor speed. The relief valve opens and the excess oil flows through the small-diameter line and eventually ends up at the hydraulic oil filter. That internal relief function makes the motor somewhat different from your normal common-or-garden gear motor.
so i was thinking today what would be better for the cat and cheaper... why dont i just cap the overflow line and loop the two preexisting lines for the fan motor and just install a decent electric waterproof fan.... do you think that is possible?

what am i doing wrong
Yo Earl, don't know of many that are johnny on the spot responses Ask a question and have to sit back and wait for an answer ALSO - POST YOUR OWN THREAD, and for help but you still most likely will have to wait maybe till tomorrow
Welcome to Heavy Equipment Forums, Earl. AllDodge is right in as much as HEF isn't like a "chat room" format, where people are sitting at their keyboards communicating in real time. Guys will come by and check out what's been posted, and if it's a topic that is of interest, they'll read the posts. If it's something they can actually help with, much of the time they'll do their best. The downside is that you never know when somebody's going to reply to your own personal concerns. Sometimes it's right away, and unfortunately, some questions never do get a reply. It's also a good point about posting your own thread. It's possible your question might get more people's attention that way, and your particular machine problem won't be mingled with somebody else's particular, but slightly different problem. If you're not sure of how to do that, there's information, here: HeavyEquipmentForums Best of luck to you.
