Cat 257B Big bill coming?

tomtirediron197 ยท 2011-06-14 15:41

Co-worker borrowed Cat 257B from landscaper-friend. When dumping load tipped the unit forward approx 45deg. angle. She attemped to shut down and crawled through loader arms while tipped. Engine never completely shut down and actually revved at a high rate of speed with black smoke for approx. 30 seconds before quitting. Her and husband tipped back upright and cannot get it to restart. All fluids appear at or near normal level and not contaminated. Cat dealer without seeing it (pure description only) says bent piston rods, no compression and therefore no start. Haven't run compression check as of yet, Anyone have any ideas. Thank you for your input!

depends on how high it reved , sounds like it started running on its own motor oil after the fuel was turned off. could be that its minor compared to a motor , it may only need a head gasket if it started to hydro lock on oil. Its very possible that the top end of the motor is just loaded with engine oil and its a hard start ? hard to say not being able to turn it over and hear what its telling you. Best of luck!

I would say to the tune of 10K if CAT does the engine replacement. That engine is toast.

If they engine is tost you may want to try and find a local diesel place to rebuild it. CAT wanted $12k for the engine replacement in my 257. Ended up taking the engine out my self then to a local perkins machine shop. Spent $4k on a full rebuild with 6month warranty. It hurt but not as bad as $12k wouldve. So does the engine spin over?

To answer your question: yes, you've got a big bill coming. Like KSSS said, that engine is smoked.

The engine is most likely done but I would want a legit tear down and inspection before a final decision is made. Working for a dealer I understand the whole engine replacement suggestion as we dont reman in-house. If you cant do it yourself and dont have a good shop who can you might be stuck. Good Luck but expect the worst. Run Aways can be the worst kind of failure.
