CAT 287C – Fault codes 190-8, 2685-8 and 2686-8

senpai01 · 2026-04-02 10:55

Hello, We have a cat 287C track skid steer, that had a faulty left drive speed sensor was faulty. We just changed it and the fault code disappeared after running it. It then re-appearex again stating both left and right speed sensors are faulty including the engine speed sensor. Trying to figure out if theres a wiring issue as ive checked for damage and none was found or does the fault codes need to be cleared out.

Can you elaborate on how you are accessing Diagnostic Codes.? Does your machine have an Advanced Display by any chance.? 2685 & 2686 both relate to the LH speed sensor assembly. (It is two sensors in a common body.) If it was the RH side sensors the Codes would be 2687 and/or 2688. 190 is a different thing altogether and should not be related to the drive motor speed sensor issue. I’m wondering if this is possibly wiring issue(s).? The first thing you need is an electrical schematic and for that the machine Serial Number is required.

This does not have an advance display, i accessed it by pressing up and info button to see the fault codes.

Would you have a wiring schematic for this model s.no CAT0287CVMAS00230

I do, but it’s inaccessible right now because my laptop is out of action. Maybe @Simon C has a copy.? Do you have the instructions on exactly how to use that display.? You might be looking at Logged Codes rather than Active ones.

Looks like an active code as i have gone through the sections and saw logged codes while i was going through the display. Active codes are just those 3

@Simon C would you have wiring schematic for this model

No instructions on how to access it, just learnt it by chance

OK. Try this. Key ON, engine OFF. There are three buttons below the two gauges. Press and hold the two outer ones for 3 seconds, then release them. The panel will now be in Service Mode 1 which shows the Active Diagnostic Codes. Snap a photo of whatever appears on the screen. Press the centre button once and release it. That will scroll to the next Code on the list. Continue with that process snapping a photo of each new Code until you get back to the first Code that appeared. What you get as a result of that will be the sum total of your Active Codes.

Just sent you the schematic. Hope you got it. Its from Nige originally. Simon C

@Nige @Simon C quick question, im supposed to get some voltage on the signal & directional wire on the left speed sensor? As i got nothing at all i checked under the cab where the extension hooks up

  11. #11Nige2026-04-07 09:59

Are you attempting to measure a signal on those wires, or something else.? How did the procedure for finding Active Codes go.?

Was the sensor you replaced Cat or an aftermarket?

  13. #13senpai012026-04-08 10:18

Yes im trying to measure signal. The procedure went as the last pictures i took, same active fault codes left speed sensor.

Its straight from CAT, we avoid after market parts for cat due to faulty recurring issues.

Just wanted to confirm what you were trying to do. In that case you will need a multimeter capable of measuring duty cycle because the signal is PWM, not varying voltage.

Forgot to mention. Measure duty cycle between either signal wire (doesn’t matter which one) and the sensor power return wire.
