cat 307b 5cw00xxx so i have removed the track. the cog. the hydro lines. and all the bolts. now what? is the whole unit pressed in? there is a lot of rust. but before i go banging on things what should my next step be? I do not have a manual.
If you have removed the ring of 12 bolts on the inside where the travel motor sits the complete final drive with motor should remove towards the outside. Including the weight of the sprocket it is 260 pounds so your assembly will be less. If it's tight it is probably stuck in with rust, a good banging with a sledge using a lump of hardwood should free it up.
Alright, time for some bangings. thanks for your quick response.
On similar final drive units I have had good success with some blocks of steel behind the sprocket hub up close to the mounting ring and some bolts with long threads, two or three gently tightened. Caution, sometimes the drive will jump out of the hole and down to the ground, best to keep body parts you are fond of out away or above the drive. Check the bolt threads at the ends and cut off if needed before removing them from the hub flange.
ok. i removed the drive. It took some hammering but came out. I have now torn it apart and the gear side is completely destroyed. there is not a part inside that is not damaged. The hydraulic motor side appears to be in good shape however there are some very fine scratched on the swash plate. but none that i can see on the pistons. does anyone here have a source for final drives used? if i were to rebuild this is would need every piece on the gear side including the spindle housing. that doesn't seem worth it.
considering that the hydraulic motor is in good shape. has anyone re tasked these motors as a new tool? i was thinking of turning it into a winch.
