Cat 320 d

High Bob I came across a CAT 320 D where the display is completely dead. The machine still cranks, but does not start. After some questions to various technicians, I was told that they disconnected the main connector to the injectors while the machine was switched on and reconnected it. The machine was only on and not running. According to my knowledge, it should not blow the screen or cause any malfunction to ECM or screen. I found the problem why the machine switched off immediately, the water separator was completely clogged. There is diesel going to injectors now, machine is cranking, but does not start. with quick start it fires and then just cranks afterwards. The problem did apparently happen after they removed the injector connector. Could they have shorted the batteries when they put it back to create this problem? Regards Seaman Sam

Do you have a Serial Number..? There are about 30 different versions of 320D ....... Is there any chance that while trying to diagnose the problem jumper cables were connected to the batteries the wrong way round..? When you crank it over on the starter is there any smoke coming out of the exhaust..? I suspect not. Have you checked all the fuses/breakers and replaced/reset where necessary..?

Hi Nige I have a serial number : FAL09391 No jumpers from the info I got, but the batteries was removed for charging. they could have connected them wrong, any possibility is there. The operator did fit them back two days before. After that they pyulled the connection and the screen went blank. That's all info I can get from the guys that worked on it. No smoke from exhaust. although with quick start it starts up and dies away. Checked all fuses

It's a common rail system so if the fuel pressure is not high enough or if the sensor is defective in any way the electronics won't come out to play and hence no smoke from the chimney. Disconnecting the "the main connector to the injectors while the machine was switched on and reconnected it. The machine was only on and not running." IMHO wouldn't cause a fault, although maybe one of our excavator experts might contradict me on that. Have you tried hooking a mechanical gauge to the fuel rail (maybe where the pressure sensor screws in?) and cranking the engine to see what pressure you have..? My suspicion is that with the amount of water that's been through the system you may have pump and/or injector damage.

After I saw the filter problem, injectors were changed. The machine is standing on an island in Maldives. No gauges here. I was hoping to get display running to see preasures

Right. Get to the wiring at the back of the monitor. You should find 2 x 12-pin connectors. On one of those 2 connectors you will find the following wire numbers: - 103 Red on Pin #1 200 Black on Pin #2 308 Yellow on Pin #3 If you close the Master switch you should have 24V between Pin #1 & Pin #2. When you turn the key switch in the cab to the ON position you should also have 24V between Pin #3 & Pin #2. Try that and report back. I'm hoping you have a mulitmeter.

Thanks a lot, will try it in morning. Now 10pm here. Multimeter available.

Maldives. Slightly jealous only because it sounds warm and pleasant?

Is it powered with the c6.4 Mitsubishi or c6.6?

  9. #9seaman sam2015-09-21 15:35

    c6.6

  10. #10Jam2015-09-21 15:40

Iv had trouble lately with the common rail pump on a c6.4 lately but that's a different system so I'm no good to you sorry

    FAL09391 is listed as being equipped with a C6.4 ........ S/No is GDC65496.

My 320dl at nearly 9k hrs was sitting on a heap at idle waiting for another trailer when she cut out. Finning sent me out a good fitter who after plugging her in diagnosed a faulty high pressure pump. We had plenty of lift pump pressure but nothing at the rail. After changing it out for a reman it fired straight away. Had one quick look at the old pump to see the mechanical side of things was like new but the solenoid/ metering valve had died.

thought it was c6.6, but is c6.4. busy working through display wires. will update later

So the OP would do well to bear in mind this possible failure mode, although to be fair he says he has fuel to the injectors. Trying to do this without a pressure gauge is like trying to go into a boxing match with one arm tied behind your back..........

Managed to find the problem. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to help. It is really appreciated. Found a small burn mark on one of the connector pins inside the main connector to the injectors. After a lot of questions, the electrician admitted that he tested for power to injectors while cranking the machine. He said that there was a small spark and after it went dead. Because injectors are not running on an earth fuse system, but directly to your screen and ECM, he basically fried both engine ECM and screen. There is power going to ECM and screen, this my conclusion after seeing the short.

Will confirm by ET when laptop arrives from other island on Thursday, but makes perfect sense.

You have inserted an anal probe into said electrician by now I take it ..........

hi guys, please exercise extreme caution with these common rail engines, the fuel rail is running at above 23000 psi that's right 23000psi. do not under any circumstance fit a pressure gauge to the fuel sensor port on the rail. Use the monitoring function of ET for diagnosis. Cat recommends to replace high pressure fuel lines if disturbed in any way .in other words do not open any part of the high pressure side of the fuel system unless you know what you are doing. injection injuries are far to common and cause horrendous injury's regards mark 250

I really wanted Nige...hahaha. a blocked filter is costing an ECM and screen. Where do some techs get schooled? I still have to confirm with ET though....

  22. #22Nige2015-09-22 05:48

Having had personal experience working in the sub-continent my comment is that they are generally schooled quite well but have major difficulties making the connection between what's between their ears and their hands........... My late grandfather explained it thus ....... "before enaging spanners engage brain".

Good to hear your on the right road.
